hi guys, planning to get a new axe soon! My budget would be 1000-1500, and i have narrowed my choices to mainly ibanez (maybe prestige or s-series) and esp cos im more into prog metal and shred stuff. im looking for one preferably with a floyd rose bridge and perhaps a modern petrucci-like tone? haha..i would greatly appreciate your suggestions! :D thanks!

An ESP axe costs a couple of thousand US Dollars so I guess you are stuck with Ibanez! :D

You want the Petrucci tone? Then must get Mesa Amps (add extra 1.5k) and upgrade pups (add $300). ;)

Seriously man. what gear do you possess now?

Your closest bet would be the RG since JP uses a 24 fret neck. The S series has 22 frets so the neck pup will sound different from JP's axes.

embrace anything that propels your tone/ playing style, regardless of the brand name. also, prog-type music can be propelled by virtually any guitars.

hmmm i have a samick sg and an a samick amp  and the axe is giving me lots of problems like warped neck etc. after playing for less than a year! ok maybe not EXACTLY a petrucci tone, something close to that? if you suggest an rg, you think a prestige would fit into the budget and which one? And what would be the best choice for the floyd rose bridge? thanks!

i think you mean to ask: which floyd-type bridge would be good to invest in. as far as i'm concerned, the Ibanez Edge units are reputable enough for whammy indulgences + they come in affordable Ibanez guitars. i'm sure ShredCow will concur. 8)

btw, you can check SOFT's review database for some shopping ideas.

If I were you, I would take a 2nd hand axe. There are some amazing RGs out there, recently, the RG3120 was on sale on luther classifieds. Anyway, if you are not comfortable.

Go for Prestiege. All come with the top end Ibanez floyd, the Edge Pro.

Just choose a model that you can afford, and have some spare cash left over, so you can upgrade the pups to something like Petrucci's, Dimarzio D-Sonic and Air Norton.

You wouldn't hear much of a diff with your tiny amp though.

So.

Maybe.

Get the cheapest Prestiege RG and get a better amp, something like the Roland Cube 30.

For pricing, call up Swee Lee.

Then when you get it all, come see me for how to setup the Edge Pro. 8)

OK.. shameful plug here. I have an old RG470 installed with a pair of SD humbuckers. I don't know the models because the previous owner forgot what he installed. But the neck pups are smooth as silk to satisfy all your shredding needs. Let me know if you're interested.

sorry kank! but i prefer brand a brand new guitar hope you understand! :) thanks for the suggestions shredcow! i guess ill be getting a prestiege then...hmm but any suggestions for the exact models for rg prestiege at sweelee given the above stated budget so i can check them out online before i go down to the shop? :D

Well. The main diff amongst the prestiege models would be finish options... mainly cosmetic.

So the uber expensive prestieges, just look nicer or have more complex finishes.

All Prestieges are well, given the prestiege treatment and use the same hardware, so no worries.

Just choose one that fits your budget and move on.

Rem, you want big improvements, you need to upgrade two things, a good guitar and a good amp.
Bad guitar, good amp, the tone is compromised by the guitar, and vice versa, although, IMO, the amp matters a lot more.

It would do you a world of good, to grab a nice axe, then compliment it with a better amp.

Or. You can go my path and buy a few thousand bucks worth of gear and pedals because my family doesn't take to amps well. :P

Alright i guess ill just go down and have a look soon! Anyway ill most likely be getting a better amp in the near future but not now and with this money... 8) thanks once again shredcow! if i need help with my floyd rose ill drop you a pm ya?

hahaha, oh yeah, you were standing there scrutinising the pedalboard....

How was the tone of the hellbilly? Its pretty hissy but I love the tone.
