Ibanez Jem jr..anybody?

Ya know, if you really like the guitar there are upgrades that can be done to make it a keeper.

The review's a guide to the pros and cons, but it doesn't stop one from owning one :)

PM tany.

He has a Jem Jr that's been upgraded and now, its great.

Using Dimarzio pups (Tonezone neck, stock middle, Super Distortion bridge) and exchanged the horrendous ILT1 trem for the great Gotoh Floyd Rose.

The guitar is much better now.

definitely. many people warned me against buying the BC Rich Bodyart guitars, but i went ahead anyway & i like it to bits...

His main guitars: Evo - alder, Pogo - alder. Flo - probably alder. His backup G is alder. Evo II and his triple neck I'm not too sure.

That being said, I read somewhere once that the Jems are mostly basswood now because that's what Vai wants. It makes sense cos Ibanez would probably be able to make alder body Jems, price them higher, and still sell as many as they are selling now. But they aren't. I dunno, maybe it's a combination of that and that Basswood is really softer and much easier to work with than alder.

in addition to the physical properties, basswood is largely a 'neutral' wood to work with tonally. keep in mind that Vai has Dimarzios there to propel a certain tone/ voicing.

Ah... Older jems were basswood.

Recently, Vai has NOT switched to basswood... the only basswood jems recently are the discontinued 7DBK (awesome tone) and the current rock mirror jem (a 7DBK essentially) , both equipped with Breeds.

There are also the JEM555 (the half jem) and Jem Jr but those are not considered as true JEMs... the Universe series is also basswood.

The only change to the stable JEM, the 7vwh, is from an Ebony fretboard to a Rosewood fretboard, in 2004.

All JEMs are basswood except 7V if my memory serves me correctly. Basswood was Mr. Vai choice of wood due to the lightweight but later he switches to Alder for bright tone.
