i just bought a pearl drum set and i have no idea how to tighten the snare wire thing. cos it sounds abit weird. and can anyone help me tune my drums? willing to pay $15-20. hahah. thanks. btw i spelt snare wrong on the title. haha

to the point just before you can't hear the snarewire vibrate off the bottom skin anymore, that should do. but depends on what music you play.

you know the push snare wire to the skin there the thing? there got circle thing for you to turn. use that haha

It pretty simple actually, if you have a tuning key, which all drummer should have. You can get on for about $5? The snare strainer would have a few tuning screws you can adjust with the tuning key.. I'm guessing the thing holding your snares is a nylon like strip? loosen the strainer and adjust until you think you like the sound.. Hope that helps.. Haha

I'm glad the softies told me to learn it myself and they will just give me tips here and there man!
And I saved $20!:p

Cheers!

Before you adjust the tension of the snare wires, you should first start with tuning the heads. Personally I prefer tune my bottom head really tight because I like my snare to be little bit more sensitive. After you are done with your bottom head, you can then start tuning the top head, using the crisis cross tuning method to bring the head up to the desire tension or tone you want or what your snare drum is capable.(http://www.drumnetwork.com/howto/tuning.htm).

Ideally, your snare should sound evenly at all corners of the lug, however I do sometime loosen 1 or 2 lugs (those furthest away from you) by half a turn just to give the snare drum a little more depth.

Once you are done with that, you can then engage the snare lever and slowly tighten the snare using tension rod starting from the extreme loose setting while tapping the top head with a stick. My preference is to set the snare tension at a level which the snare will crack even with the slightest touch, but not loose to the extent that it start buzzing.

If the factory default setting of the snare is out of the tuning range (either too tight or too loose), you will have to reset the "neutrel" setting, by turning off the snare, loosening the tension rod all the way and then unlock the snare wire at both ends (either with screw driver or tuning key) and then reset and reposition the snare wire.

It is always a good practise tighen the snare gripper before adjusting the snare because it often get loose over time.

What I am sharing is just my preference of snare tuning and you should try to experiment other sort of tuning (especially head and snare tension) to suit your music and style.
