Hi all,

Hope to start some discussions to neutralize what most of us could be sufferring from ---- GAS (Gear Acquiring Syndrome)

I'm as guilty when it comes to GASing.
It's like a never-ending quest, the quest for THE great tone, favorite tone, personal tone, whatever...

I personally went thru' this experience:
I got myself a multi-effects A, played it for just a few months, on the usual riffs I always play. Then, later on, multi-effects B was released, it has a higher bit-rate, more sophisticated sound, functions, etc. And there, i got the multi-effects B, still, i was playing the same riffs all over again. I got myself busy with the manuals, doing the 1000,001 tweaking, and still, i doing the same old riffs all over again.

The same goes for analogue/digital pedals, guitars, etc.

The point i'm trying to make is: we should focus on acquiring skills and knowledge, and not so much on acquiring gears.

I played the same riff over many pedals, I rather nail many riffs over the same pedal...

Maybe i'm the only one going thru' this...

Well, if you are happy with your tone, you will be more enthusiastic about playing.

On the other hand, you could just grab a very very fine piece of gear that would be just so good, you don't feel like getting anything else. Thats what the HAS Sound Viper pickups did to me. I don't want any more pickups.

theres no such thing as an end to GAS...itll be there til the day you die....

take a look at all your favourite artists

Try plugging Guitar -> Amp if you've been running through too much equipment in between, and play clean.

It might stun you how good it sounds, and how much you've forgotten about that basic tone.

Something valuable I learnt from a tech: it's more important to try and coax sounds/tones out of your existing gear, rather than replacing gear for instant success. That knowledge and time spent with that existing gear is highly valuable. This applies especially with regards to guitars and amps.

Shred,

yepp, that's one way to stop the GAS, temporary. Because one day, some other manufacturer is going to outdo the rest, and the whole cycle will start. But, it'll be quite a while before that can happen. So, here's

#1: Just wack the best gear, to last you a longer time.

Thor is a minimalist. More power to you.

I don't agree with him. ;) Quite obviously.

Each his own :)

I've learnt that my opinion is only as good as another's. There isn't one opinion that suits everyone.

Whatever it is, just enjoy playing your guitar.

At the end of day, I believe one must thread one's "road less travelled".

You GAS you GAS you KEEP GASing. It will not end.

So you buy.

At the end of the day, you will know new things. You may end up with a better understanding of which guitar mods are actually useful and which are nonsense. Or why a Solid State amp can never match a Tube Amp. Or well, find out you've been spending too much money/time/effort on gear. Or find out you are really a Gear-Phile and you do enjoy it more than playing.

Its a journey of understanding and we all go thru it.

Things i've said here, 10 years down, or even 2 years down or even next month after I get my tube amp, I may look at it and frown.

I don't think one should constrict oneself to do the opposite. Rather, realise the urge to experiment/learn and go out there, and learn/experiment.

I believe I will stop when I look at my empty wallet. But then you start selling your equipment... back to square one. Probably like have to quit guitar or something and take up like, gardening. :?

-Take away your internet access, that should help quite a bit. :)

totally agree with you

I've honestly stopped at what my board has now, telling myself that it's really sufficient in the tone department to handle what i CAN and also TRY to play.

Meanwhile, what i'm saving now goes to my acquisition of a proper tube amp. Deviating from this course of action brings about worse consequences, more gear purchase and always back to square 1.

At least this is how i deter myself

simple!!.. buy an extremely expensive pedal or guitar.. so much so that you dun have enuf $$$ to buy any other gear.. tat wld def. stop all your GAS.. ahha

1. Get married to an obsessive compulsive wife?

2. Go on rebound and date every girl you know.

3. Play any mmorpg and aim to be the greatest living planet hero.. Heheh..

Go molest someone and get jailed. No internet, no form of ads, unless the TV pops out a guitar one...then your GAS will be stopped! For a few years at least...
