I'm just wondering.

Is a rock voice somethign acquirable? Something that I can learn how to do? If so, how do I go about it?

Cheers,
firethorn.

imo it -is- acquirable, but you have to practice so that you'll warm up your voice to its tone and style... like.. consistent rock vocallings...

i suppose i shouldn't suggest it, but a number of my rock vocal-pals suggest lots of smoking too :/ but naturally that just messes your throat-health.. so forget i mentioned it :X

Yea a sore throat and smoking can give you that rougher voice but I also don't think that's too advisable. haha.

Thanks though. :D

Well the characteristics of a rock voice is the power and clear solid tone usually accompanied by a bit of roughness. The main requirement is a solid diaphragm support and the opening up of the throat. A lot of breath is required to sustain a good note and the 'whamming' effect. Good projection usually comes along too.

I works if u try to imagine ur voice hitting your audience.

yes smoking does it.... I used to sound like Dick Lee :x before I started smoking now I sound like Bryan Adams

Dont strart though!

i used to smoke a stick of malboro reds or any kind of reds and gulp down a glass of warm water, before i start my singing..thats how i do it....

PS:this by no means encourages those who wants to have a gruff voice to start smoking...trust me, once you start you can't stop.

cheers!

Cigarettes are not the answer to a "rock" voice man...its alll about tone..whether you have a jazz...blues...pop voice...whatever...its all got to do with tone...there are a number of vocaists who dt smoke and sing in rock bands..for instance bruce dickinson of iron maiden and rob halford of judas priest..dont smoke ad his voice is opratic as hell...on the other hand...pppl like axl rose and robert plant are smokers..so if you havent started smoking..there's no point in starting just to get that kinda voice..pinpoint the tone that you want..and condition your voice..as in do a rock version of a pop song..or sth like that..for example..hope this helps..

hey !

being able to sing rock is a talent ... its a gift and its not easy to sing rock song as u can see there is many things to look at,
- tone
-pitch
-power projection
- vocal range
- breathing control etc......

not many are born with this talents esp, in singapore its hardly to find a really good band that play 80 and 90 rock like steelheart , firehouse,GNR but Practicing WILL help but u will onli reach a stage where thats ur best . kepp rockin rockers!

- tone
-pitch
-power projection
- vocal range
- breathing control etc......

Isn't that standard for any types of vocals? I think what makes rock vocals different are not those per se, but how those things are tweaked at certain ways, right? :?

its alll about tone..whether you have a jazz...blues...pop voice...whatever...its all got to do with tone...

Er... So how do you get a "rock tone" ?

I don't imply that tone isn't a part of rock vocality (all vocals have tone in the issue) but I don't think it's the predominant ingredient in rock vocals.. Unless of course you guys are referring to "rock vocal tone" ah.. which has to be developed and not naturally your own voice tone shining through..

I've always put aside rock vocalworks seperately from tone, cos tone is just an entity on its own; it's the addition of certain techniques that get that tone "rocked out". It isn't so clearly obvious on male rock voices because the majority of male rock vocals' tones mould into a close frequency, but if you compare female vocal tones in rock vocality (for example; the rock vocals of Lambretta, Guano Apes and Lullacry), you'll notice they all have completely different tone, but add vocal accents and styles to make it "rock".
Best example to check out would probably be Lambretta, cos she has a sweet feminine tone, always squeakishly childlike, but she applies rock accentations to get it in the rock style..

It's like someone asking how to sing country music... tone besides (since it uses standard singing principles), what gives the twang isn't the tone, but the way its sung.. same thing with rock vocals.. My two cents..

hey there!

rock vocalist are the one we should look up too ~~~ they sing they run and rock the stage thier range is superb just look at steelheart~~~ that band is damn good. CompareD some new band nowadays... they are finding diffent style but look at them again how in the hell u can find this talents .... u can count in the whole world.... a few 40 may be ...

yeah all types of singing also need to look at the factors i said above but rock vocalist is using alots of the fators almost all some i neva said i guess... haha anyways rock on!!

I think its aquirable, you just gotta have lots of patience & practice of course. When I sing rock songs,I find the 'growling' technique to be pretty useful. It helps me get that added rock feel.Try singing a rock song you're comfy with & try to get your voice to sound hard/rough.Practice makes perfect!

If you listen to a band like Travis, the singer usually uses a clear, beautiful voice. But when he wants to he switches on "rock voice". It's something you can find by playing around a bit.

The best approach I've found is to start with a normal voice, then try adjusting your vocal space with various muscles. It helps to listen to the singer you're trying to emulate first, and try to copy (but keep good technique at the same time).

i disagree with the smoking thing, because i'm a smoker too, and after smoking i always feel the phelgm clogging up my throat, not allowing me to hit higher notes and affecting my growling and screaming

Yea smokin will limit ur full vocal capabilities. Hwever,I know of some singers who smoke but still sound good so I'm guessing if they didn't smoke, they'd be even more terrific singers than they r now. I used 2 smoke but it put alot of strain on my vocals whenever I sang & I knew there was a difference in the quality & range of my voice before & after I took a puff. I guess if someone wans 2 b a really good singer & smokin ain't helpin, you gotta make a choice.
