How to sing harmony without affected by the lead Vocal?

Hi,

Normally when I sing harmony in KTV,

I will always be affected by the main melody line sing by friend.
(ie. instead of sing harmony, I'll get drifted or sing as same tune as the song's main melody)

Anyway to improve?

You have to really concentrate on your own vocal line, if possible, dun listen to what the lead vocal is singing......

Actually you have to listen, to maintain the chords. But still you have to concentrate. Unless you're doing clashing chords (which is unusual for KTV songs), then you can close one ear. Oh and you must be really familiar with chords and cadences.

Usually, my conductor will tell me to think of what note i want to sing before i open my mouth. It actually helps alot, more like a concentration thingy. You must know what note you want to sing and concentrate on that note.
