harlo. ive been playing the guitar for 7 months now. so now i guess it comes to this for now. that is shredding. i am starting slow or some weird scale. but when i sped it up i always fumble.

what are the keys to shredding? is it position of the pick?(whether it should be positioned sideways) how should my hand be positioned?(my whole right hand. no the string itself or behind the saddle?) or should my hands be floating like paul gilbert's?

it kinda worries me cause ive been switching positions for a week now.

and what are the keys in practicing?

help me guys. im begining to feel like im sucking at playing guitar. =(

yeah, you'll meet barriers like these and feel like giving up. i myself have gone through that stage before.

have a teacher? ask him/her.

dont have one like me? try to watch more instructional videos(especially by paul gilbert) and GO SLOW.

like DEAD SLOW alright. use a metronome. wanna be accurate and precise like all your favourites? metronome. they all used metronomes during practice for sure.

if you cant do it slow, you cant expect to do it fast right?

good luck man.

shred- is there such a thing as shredding? there is, of course, that's why there's a shredder:

jokes aside, fast playing is one of familiarity with tempo & what one plays. i get a more effective results formulating my own phrases to play fast rather than regurgitating instructional materials.

..but when i sped it up i always fumble.

that is often the big misconception when it comes to playing fast. you see, why you fumble is because both your hands have not been familiarised with the technique enough and therefore CONSTANT practice in playing slowly will build up muscle memory in both hands. the only rule is not to rush or you'll end up playing sloppily. and the good thing is why will this work is because by doing so your hands will automatically "know" how to shred and therefore you don't even have to have the word shred in your mind.

don't forget to use metronome! ah, very important tool especially when it comes to shredding since you are training in speed and timing.

is it position of the pick?(whether it should be positioned sideways) how should my hand be positioned?(my whole right hand. no the string itself or behind the saddle?) or should my hands be floating like paul gilbert's?

for the pick, you should hold it in a way where your thumb is flat and the side of your finger is flat down on the other side of the pick. and how should your hand be positioned? this is really up to your personal preferences. the key is comfort. wether you are able to access the strings from the saddle or wether you need to float your hand is based upon wether you are comfortable with it. personally i float my hand, but i slightly anchor my palm on the bridge when i do speedier stuff.

ok, i hoped that helped. if you want your practice to be more efficient you can go watch John Petrucci's Rock Discipline on youtube. he'll teach ya how to shred with the drills and excercises.

happy shredding!

cheers =)

Just keep practicing over and over.

Do it slow over and over till you're comfortable with it.

Then speed up. You'd be able to play fast in no time!

Don't ever rush it hah. Instructional videos on technique really help too.

start slow
get ur basics right first, play slow first to
familiarise urself with different techniques, then practise n practise.
as u gradually improve and get used to the diff techniques , speed up
yes and a metronome definitely helps.

hope you are not upset or something, but chances are you can shred, you just don't know you can.

that's encouraging bro.. hehs.. guess its cos of my playing style (rock and blues) that doenst require me to shred, but this thread has upped my interest in learning shred. :D
*images of malmsteen in my head* LOL!!!

2 ways I shred 1 is put some fingers on the pickguard and the rest float and use your forearm and go up and down real fast. Michael angelo does this for his no boundaries video. You can go real fast. The other way is like paul gilbert, palm mute the top 3 strings at all times so when you play those notes it has a muted sound for that method use your wrist to do the up and down motion like u know waving bye bye. My recommendation is palm mute the top 3 string reason is the muted sound on those strings are reallly nice!! And I'm lovin it!!
anymore questions?

I think the most important is coordination between right and left hand.
Don't disregard your picking hand haha.
No point practising your left hand till it can go really fast
Then your picking hand either goes too fast or can't catch up with the left hand
Do slow then speed up. Patience is the key.
You'll get it in to time bro!
