Do you have a drumset at home? I could bring my Zoom H4n recorder over and do a test recording.

James, the H4 is superb man! And to think that it only cost as much as a mid-ranged MD-recorder 7-8yrs back is just even more amazing!

yea....i wanted to get a H4n too but it was like 400+ even at PC show...didn't have any cash at hand then. sad..

please tell me you're kidding. anyway i'm trying a drum recording at my house using a simple setup. profire 2626 interface, sm 57 for snare, sm81s for overhead, and still looking for a kick mic. anyone willing to lend a large diaphragm mic for testing? haha...pm me thanks.

oh i'm using Cubase 5, though it's giving me lots of problems.

Mine is not so advanced and cheaper - I am using the H2 :) It has served me quite well so far but relatively speaking, of course - compared to my microphone of my digital camera :)

I am interested to hear the recording sample differences between the H2 and the H4n, if anyone has it or wants to try.

thx for the response but im actually using 1 shitty singing mic to record the drums while my drummer playing at home...he does have a drumset at home...
but it turn out quite bad...
As for the Zoom H4N....how much does it cost?....
pardon for my ignorant.

you know what he means. of course it's a whole new story if you're using electronic drums as a midi controller. if that's the case i can just say use a keyboard to record "drum parts" or even your capslock keyboard if you dont have a midi controller. or your mouse. just click it in. you don't even need any gear. just get reaper (free software, awesome to use) on a PC and click away.

you know he means acoustic drums...

Well, i wont really recommend a h4 if you want to do multi track recording.. The h4 is notorious for its drift. You will sound in time for the first 30 seconds to 1 minute, but after that, it will sound off.

If you really want a professional sounding recording, you have no choice to get good instrumental mics or maybe a 5/7 piece drum mic. The closest i got to a "pro" sounding recording was placing 3 sm57s strategically. Which was 1 in front of the bass drum, one in between the snare and HH to capture the crash, snare, HH and tom, and one more in between the ride and floor tom.. The result was not bad but without a diaphragm mic, i didnt get enough bass..

or dun even nid a mic...

@evident: Well to be fair, the TS did ask if he actually needed a mic to record so I was just pointing out that it's possible without micing traditionally. And you're right, you can input drum parts using mouse and keyboard but my opinion of that is only as a last resort cos your parts will tend to sound too un-dynamic, but I suppose that's obvious already.

Anyway to the TS, here's a method which I personally haven't tested but seems pretty fuss free and only requires 2 well-placed mics: Recorderman Overhead Drum Mic Technique

Anyone knows whether recorderman overhead technique works well? Cos i wanna record drums but i'm on a tight budget, need to be as cheap as possible. XD

Hey James, you're selling H4? What's the diff between H4 and H4n? Can I test it someday? I need a recorder too. :-D

i use my hand phone and the wierd thing is i can hear everything clearly even bass. but when i upload it on youtube the sound somehow lags after my movement
