hi guys, sorri for asking this kinda questions, its rather noob. i have been playing bass with a pick for like 3 months... when i try playing with fingers, the sound isnt rite.. it sound like.. "ten ten ten" like metal hitting metal. am i suppose to pick with my nails? or it is coz i pick with my nails that this cause this funny sound? next, how does slapping works? i dun really understand online lessons

Hey Wasup dude!

in the 1st place, bass is 99% played with the fingers.
mostly using the 1 2 1 2 technique.
u don played it using nailz!
Dude, dat gotta hurt man!

wen a pick is used, i assume its for some punk songs.
u can hear the difference wen u hear some BLINK 182 songs.
using a pick gifs a more metal hittin metal kinda feel and sound.

so whether using a pick or not, entirely depends on ur style and feel.
Experiment !!!!

Cheers!

i tried playing using the 1 2 1 2 wae wen the nails on my right hand(my picking hand) were quite long n ther was tt overdriven sound coming out of the amp...

n to add on to drive 4's question on slapping, izit using the thumb joint to hit the strings?tt's wat my fren said..n i read in anthr thread tt u're supposed to use 'the hard part of the thumb' to hit the strings..n i suppose the hard part is the joint?am i wrong?

i'm not exactly a bass player but i used to play as substitute bassist for some bands ... so this is my few cents worth.

Sound produced by Picking a Bass is a little metellic ... which means it will sound brighter compared to using your fingers. It's much easier to use a pick than running with your fingers which also depends on the genre of music you are playing.

But if you want to improve as a bass player ... i suggest you practice using your fingers ... that is when you are really FEELING the bass with your skin instead of using a Pick.

When you can FEEL the bass with your fingers running ... you will know how it FEELs to be refined ... just like how it takes some time for a beginner guitarist to get used to strumming love songs to his girlfriend .... you need time to refine your running bass before it crosses the finish line .... gee.

So keep running with your fingers ... and maybe you can try running 1 2 1 2 using different angles .... like how a guitarist will strum in different angles with the right hand to get the rightt sound.

Next, try using different tone .... if your bass sounds ... "ten ten ten" ... then you probably ask your bass to stop counting ... kiddin ... :) "ten ten ten" sounds like your tone is a little too bright ... might wanna reduce the treble. Try not to boost your bass unless neccesary coz that will drown the band. You may boost the MID is you want ... play around untill you get the "Dom Dom Dom" sound ... :)
