Hi guys,
pls do not leave this thread because of i'm a beginner:p I'm have been trying gypsy jazz guitar with no music background and whatsoever experience in other instrument except flute i played in my primary sch day:p. I know it a big leap to this genre. I having difficulty proceeding further beyond the beginner boundary, been reading and practicing thru justinguitar.com and jazz reference book but don't feel right. Everything I learned are just small portion of here and there. Any recommendation on sch/private that possible to teach this style of guitar? I really have not idea where I can learn that in sg.

Pls do shed some light on this.:)Thks.

Hey killerfish, how I fly in my musical journey of Jazz is something like this:

I'm taking BA(Hons) Music (Jazz Performance) in LASALLE College of the Arts, and it contains the most Jazz you can squeeze out of Singapore IMO. Day in Day out we do nothing but practice(& fooling around) during school days, simply because we choose to. And at nights, my schoolmates & I jam either in school, or in pubs like BluJazz with the when there are Jam Sessions with the world class Jazzcats. Then in the weekends, i teach privately, & always never fail obtain something about them that i can reflect upon(& jamming demonstratively with them helps me keep my II-V-I licks in check!)

Personally, my advice to you is to get out there and jam. Find friends! Jam with whoever, wherever, whatever style. Make sure it is focused, constructive & productive. & since you're learning Gypsy Jazz, jam the tunes that you've learnt every single time you jam. Throw in your II-V-I licks, and don't be afraid to go django style. All in order for you to keep your creative juices flowing and seal in the hours of practise you've put in before they get forgotten & go to waste.

Hope you caught something, keep practising!

Thks for your encouraging input especially the in bold. I always afraid most is picking up bad-habit along my way, all the time spent will be in vain.

Bad habits aren't the end of the world. Sometimes, we gain a lot of perspective from unlearning and relearning correct technique and habits.

WoW!! Good to know such an accomplished musician here! Am also wanting to pick-up jazz guitaring and youtube's provided some clues as to what that entails. But clues are all they are... Interested to take lessons and since you teach privately, perhaps you can PM me details so we can be in touch? Thanks!
