How to know the string gauge of that guitar you bought?

Hey guys, i have had a Yamaha Apx-700 acoustic-electric for quite some time now. I regret not maintaining it properly. Anyway, it's time for a string change but problem is, i dunno what string gauge to use. And i realise it's important to know this because if i use a different gauge, it might affect the neck and nut, etc, and undesirable results may occur. And acoustic guitars can't be set up as easily as an electric!

Any idea what's the string gauge of the strings on the yamaha apx 700? Bought it at yamaha ps. Went down there yest to ask 2 of the staff. One said 11 and the other said 12 so i'm not too sure. Would rather confirm this here first. Anybody?

Also, does beez set up acoustics?

lolx.. it may sound silly... but... u can use a caliper to measure... :X... .01 difference... its hard to sense eh...

think its able to hold light to extra light gauge ba... i always just change mine like tat... doesnt give any prob....

Most of the APX series feel like a 11...

It common that they are not sure....hahaha

Use what you're comfortable with loh. How to find out? Buy a few packs of different gauges to try.

beez sets up ANYTHING.

i do believe its .12, my friend's been using his apx700 for a long while and he's been with .12's for just about that long.

brought my friend to beez to set up his acoustic..

beez did a really good job..the guitar juz sounded different after that..

IMO it juz sounds sweeter.. :lol:


my fren hated his guitar..even wanted to give it away..but told him to give it a good set up...brought him to beez..

now he's so much into his acoustic guitar..he shuns his electric. :lol:

i guess i'm gonna let beez apply his magic touch onto my guitar then. hopefully, it'll sound like a totally new and better guitar after that 8)

Hmm.

General consensus is that 12s are the best gauge to bring out the "true tone" of your acoustic. That said I use 10s, sometimes 11s because I do loads of bending on my instrument.
