how to i self teach myself?

If you're just starting out, try get some form of proper instruction, like a private tutor, school or friend who knows stuff. Its quite essential to get the proper basic techniques done well(finger positioning, strumming, plucking, etc).

If you're beyond that, then everything else like scales, speed training, watever can more or less be done independently with books, mags (Total guitar for instance) or some tips found at some of the threads here.

A good start will go a long way. It's really important not to develope bad habits/incorrect techniques, of which you'd have to un-learn and re-learn later on.
I suffer from it.

Just remember the important thing, if you're going somewhere after your O or A levels, don't. Or if you're already somewhere, QUIT now!!! You can't let school get in the way of your guitar playing.

lol...ive taken lessons before. but paying that large sum of money a month doesnt feel quite right with me as its my parents' money....so what would be a good book to start on?

book on chords/scales. or like what gutty said, the internet is your friend. or make friends with some guitarists.

yes, internet is a very good place to start ... not like those old days ... we have to relie on books ... no 1 to show us ...

u can try www.chordbook.com for a start ... or www.cyberfret.com to read up more about playing the guitar ... u might strumble upon other website that u might like ... try it ... it's fun

Actually, would it be ok to go take a group class e.g. in Yamaha?

I'm abit worried and paiseh coz I've never learnt the guitar before, and i'm kind of trying to move back into music after so many years, and feeling kinda of apprehensive.

you can take the group classes, it's up to you to decide. from what i heard from my friend, it goes quite slowly. why don't you wait for the theory 101 by our fellow softies here
