yea go to youtube and such, look for techniques that you can pick-up to improve your double-pedaling. it's not just about speed, though.

hey thx alot!!! yep will look it up on youtube....
iits just tat i wanna increse mi speed so can do nicer beats with double pedal

hmm....lets see...1st of all...you need a click..(metrenome)
set ithe bpm to the point wher you are most comfortable and bulid up
ur endurance and speed from there...
do simple stuffs like straight 16th notesor sumthin, after a few bars lets say abt 10 or so...
increase the tempo by abt 2 bpm at a time..try to experiment with where ur feet is on the footboard(eg.the front, middle or near the end).also...try and get ur sweet spot arnd the footboard so very little effort of force is needed to exacute ur pedal chops...hehe !!no pain no gain BUT don go and do it till ur legs go numb or sumthin...hehe....hope tht helps

peace,
smil

hi mirul..theres no easy way to do it... basically..it takes lots of hours of practice and endurance...you have to constanly play genres which will push you..and build up your muscles... key points are

1. push yourself its all about endurance like how an athelte would push him/herself... you cant expect an athlete to jump right into a game without training hard for it and constanly be playing games that would prep him or her for which proper muscles to use.

extreme drumming when it comes to double pedal is like sports it works the muscles like an athlete would. so you have to train/practice hard in order to reach your goals, in this context you have to constantly play with a band that plays metal, you have to practice practice practice and push yourself, you have to be in shape physically, if it means getting yourself in shape physically by jogging and doing weights or forms of muscles strenghtening excersices, then do it, eating right plays a part too, you dont have to be a muscle freak to play double pedals, its all about streghtening.

as unrelavent as it seems the abs plays a big part in strenghtening your back in order to play fast double pedals, as you have to keep your balance in playing double pedal cos at fast 16th, most of the time you depend on your centre of gravity while on the throne, again you dont have to have abs of steel, its all about strenghtening, so even sit ups before practice, after and sit ups before gigs helps.

seat height while playing drums and double pedals plays a big part too. try to have your seat positioned in such a way..that it takes minimal effort to remain on the seat even when both your feet are off the ground, when you find that height, try to balance for as long as possible, it will hurt but like i said its all about strenghtening and conditioning. after awhile you will realize that if positioned correctly you will have an easier time playing double pedals.

all these can only do you good.

points to note

1. its strengthening, conditioning and practice.

2. the heel toe technique helps in a lot of ways.. but to NOT comprimise power you have to try to do singles at the same time work on your doubles..i.e. RR, LL, RR, LL, without the heel toe technique to get the best results and power.

4. listen to yourself while practicing instead of what you hear in your head while practicing, record your progress via a chart and have a form of audio/visual recorder to listen back to your jamming sessions or practice sessions, most of the time we dont even know we are lagging behind time, pushing too much or the fact that sometimes we sound damn sloppy

4. be true to yourself, dont be in denial, if you think it sounded bad, work on it.

5. there is no easy way out. hard work pays.

for examples view these videos from derek roddy..and try to follow them at the same time on your practice regimes.

*note, there is a groove when even playing metal.

use chinas, hi-hats or even the bell of the ride more often to accentuate the pulse or groove as a latin player would on his claves, even if there are perutations around the groove find ways to keep the pulse of the 1/4 note going.

check out meshuggah's latest release "OBZEN" and this song "bleed" ( BLABBERMOUTH.NET - MESHUGGAH: 'Bleed' Video Available ) for examples of keeping the pulse and grooving even when double pedaling in this case the song has mainly a triplet groove on the riff and the bass drum with a flam at the start of the groove, whilst the song is in a 4/4 feel, as the song progress it as different riffings in which the bass drum syncopates with, at the same time enjoy the music video, it is truly a work of art.

video of drums for "bleed" done by a dude from vancouver. pretty spot on.
YouTube - Meshuggah "Bleed" Video Drumming Competition

*note* listen to the hi-hat or china cymbals in some cases thomas keeps the snare going on 2 and 4 even when doing permutation around the groove. try bobbing your head with the 1/4 note pulse and you will find that pulse and groove.

double bass drum not only can be applied in all 16th context, you can break them up in groups.

heres a examples from virgil donati

*note his feet, even when doing doubles are going as strong as singles each stroke is even.

Posting long, detailed and constructive replies at a time when most people are still asleep - nice one Brandon! Thanks for the video links.

haha ya man nice of you to do that!

Well the bottom line is PRACTISE... Thats the only way... No bull haha! Triggers dont make you sound smoother... But they can make u sound faster due to the tight sounds of triggers. So it may not be fun at first. But after practise its fun!

Enjoy!

though i'm not a drummer, just want to suggest that you can take a look at videos of John Blackwell Jr, he came to Singapore recently. what he does is that he does all the crazy rapid bass beats with just a single bass pedal. i think youtube has his videos, can try to search them out. it's just for information, that there are people with incredible techniques like that haha.

my drummer bro has been practising it, almost broke his leg haha :D

all the best in your double pedal training!
