How to do screamo?

Just a thought to the screamo vocalists; What are the changes to your voice, singing or speaking, in the long run of singing screamo? Like do you feel your throat opens up more easily, or whether your speaking voice becomes louder?

DO you guys know the local extreme metal band Ragdoll Epilogue.
Haha i talked with Ragdoll Epilogue vocalist before.
His voice kinda soft and funny in a way.
I'm not really sure but just my point of view.
He's screaming is a little close to the OLD Black Dahlia Murder album types.

Man, they're great local bands here.

you can try listening to hawthorne heights. i think their screamer, Casey Calverts, screams really beautifully and clear.. like you can actually make out what he's screaming.. but too bad he passed away on november 2007.

Rip Casey :(

Umm.. help me understand cos I don't really get it.

I just saw a Silverstein video and the first thing I thought - what does that type of growling do to the song? What is its purpose?

You've got an emo song for depressed people and the singers are always portrayed with a crying expression and then in the middle of the song, or intermittently. the singer growls.

As far as I know, growling has always been associated with metal, you know - songs with testosterone and anger and machismo and all that.

So, I can't seem to connect emotional, whiney songs, with manly growling, personally.

Help me to understand. ;)

i dont really know how to explain tho but if im not wrong, its like you want to scream out all your misery for such songs.. you know like very drama one...

Yes, for screaming it does make sense.

But growling?

Some of these bands (like Silverstein) do growl leh. Like when a dog wants to attack somebody, it growls first as a sign of warning.

I don't think depressed or suicidal people growl leh.

ps Please don't misunderstand and think I'm dissing. I am just curious.

listen to metal and understand the history behind it first,

can get a better pic of why people scream/growl

Yes, I listen to some metal and do understand most metal bands and why they scream and growl.

The techniques used makes sense with the music being generated.

I just don't understand and can't associate growling with emo, sad songs of depression and hopelessness.

Understanding the history of metal will not help me understand this new genre, I think.

Unless somebody explains to me exactly the logic behind it all.

But remember, the terms I am concerned about here are precisely 'growling' and 'emo'. Not screaming or whatever else.

ps Growling is low pitch distorted vocally-produced sounds, as compared to high-pitched 'screams',

;)

normally those emo songs u say with growling in it are more likely to be hardcore isnt it? or maybe not hardcore, but a genre slightly heavier than emocore

imho, perhaps it aint about how they wanna expressed their own emotions thru their music, but more of we, ourself perceived how each sound can only be represented by a certain form of style

sometime perhaps it aint why, but whether does it fit in their context which they created]. If its able to fit it in there somewhere and able to express themselves in the way they want to be heard, why not?

Out mind is holding us back, while the rest of them is moving on and blending different influence/style for the way they want their music to be heard.

imho

I've been screaming for about 2 years now and am on recordings and have a faily large local following. One thing that you should learn from the start is the correct technique! It'll help you so much in the long run man. Mellisa Cross's 'Zen of Screaming' DVD is great and has one of the best warm ups I have come across in my time. If you can't find a copy in singapore it can always be found in certain places ;)
Learn to breathe through your nose and into your diaphram, by doing this you bypass the throat and all the pain it does causes you.You could also try inhale screaming just to find your tone and after your happy with that start learning the correct breathing and singing techniques further down the track. Its really your choice man :)

Feel free to send me a pm or something if theres anything in particular that you want help with.
Good luck bro.

The connection between "growling", "screaming", "emo" and "screamo"

To hecklerkoch, screaming is to express yourself in the sense that you just want to scream all your misery out and get rid of the pain inside. But for growling in emo/screamo bands like Silverstein, it's because the vocalists are trying to convey the sense that after screaming for so long, they are physically drained and thus can no longer scream to express themselves and thus turn to growling to continue getting rid of their sadness. But of course they are not tired, it's just to give the illusion of exhaustion but still emotionally drained after already being exhausted. Got it? I know it's deep stuff. It took me a while to understand at first too. That's what emo is about. It's about thinking deep. Not that I'm saying you're unintelligent, of course.

Anyway in the recent years, the line betweeen screamo and metal has been blurred to a point that the vocal techniques and the genres have been used interchangeably to a point where sometimes one genre is confused with another. Thus even growling has been used in screamo bands.

By the way, I can scream really well now. Loud and clear and totally emo-sounding. For me, my normal speaking voice has still been the same throughout. The long-term effects on your speaking voice differs from person to person actually.

Oh, and Silverstein owns. They're one of my favourite bands.

2 things.

1. Yes, it does alter your voice. Sometimes the tendency is to forget all technique in the heat of the moment and just whack, and over time, your voice will start to become a little raspy. If you do it often enough you find that you sometimes auto-lapse into your "distorted" voice, if you will, when you push. If you want to find out what bad technique does to your voice, talk to me, I'll show you. >.<

2. If you try to push your voice to sound like someone else, you're going to damage it even faster. Your best bet is to practise breathing directly into your diaphragm, as some of the others have already mentioned. Once you get used to it you'll find that by simply forcing the air out of your diaphragm, you can control the warble and tone of your screams. Try for short, controlled grunts first, then as you become more familiar with the way it works for you, try to control the amount of breath you throw out so you can push longer. If your technique is right, you should feel minimal or negligible soreness in your throat.

It's not something that can be explained like this, you got to see it in person to understand how it works.

hmph.

i always growl using the back of my throat.
does it affect and make it worse ?

still tryin out to use the diaphragm.

and is it true that if it hurts when youre doing a scream it prob means youre not doing right.

and if that is true. why do M shadows undergo an operation for his vocal cords.
some vessels burst i think. aint that weird. but his screams are orgasmic. musically lah that is.

i may ask a noob question here im sorry. but im just curious.

hey the zen of screaming 2 is out quite some time ago btw..
the zen of screaming 2 focuses more on screaming than on warm ups :)
