how to compare pickups

I don't exactly agree with that. Take the hotrails for example, they're an integral part of Iron Maiden's sound. And they put it to good use using the cleans for songs like No More Lies, and overdriven for the solos etc. You don't exactly have to use EMGs to achieve the heavy rock sound. People do listen to riff's. Say for songs by Racer X, harder to appreciate sometimes, but people do go "ooooo" when Paul plays some really cool riff/solo.

Since nishant mentioned he'd be playing cleans possibly in the future, i think that pickup would be a good match.

From the music you play i say it doesnt really matter what you use.

Metallica wouldn't sound like Metallica if they just used for eg. SD hotrails instead of EMG60s,81s...

My point = it does matter

Yes i know it doesnt matter but this guy wants us to name a pickup, and the EMG 81 is what hetfield/hammett uses. Read my post i did say it doesnt matter what he uses. The point is a note is still a note played with distortion it should still sound 60 - 70% similar to what the artistes sound like ...

Well i apologize for the slight misunderstanding. Anyway, Kirk's now using Seymour Duncans for his live work. JB/Jazz set up. As far as i know these are in his live guitars now.

Would hot rails at the bridge and EMG 81 at the neck work? Btw, for the 'muddy'/heavy distortion, are there any decent pedals to reccomend?

One more question, how does the Sans Amp GT2 work?

Please do pardon my ignorance. I'm still pretty new...

Yea it'll work. It'll be an interesting combination. If you do make such a combination, be sure to check with the tech about the potentiometers that might help balance the output between the passive hotrails and the active EMG.

Passive and active pickups do not mix well but used on their own, it is fine. You'll have to use a separate volume pot and tone pot for each pickup though. When combined the sound is muddy due to the 25 k pot which active pickups tend to use. If I remember correctly EMG has a circuit used to correct this problem. Don't think Davis carries it though.

The hype over the hotrails isn't nearly as much as the ones over the lil59s and Jbjrs. But i suppose it's because it caters to the majority of musicians who love the modern heavier sounds.
