How much easier is the bass compared to the guitar?

We're talking full electric,amp-playing instruments here of course.The 4-string versus the 6-string.Which is easier to play/learn?The bass?Or the guitar?Of course versatility-wise,the guitar would win.:D

you can search for past threads. there are so many of these topics. And i agree with Kirin. They are both different instruments and different methods are used to play on the instruments.

Bass is easier to learn then guitar i would suppose but then bass players probably need to have tighter sense of rhythm coz they need to complement guitarist n drummer both at the same time . Techniques involved also abit different coz bass can give a certain percussion element.

Am i right ? i dunno haha

Oh no not this qn again.
Bass guitar and e guitar are two different instruments like what kirin said.
Diff play feel satisfaction speed.
Stuff like chords and other keys are the same.
But still two totally different instruments.

To me...

Bass is easy to learn, hard to master.

Guitar is harder to learn, easier to master.

Note that I said easier, not easy.

=)

Learn er-hu.. 2 strings.. less than 4.

I used to play er hu when i was in primary school, not easy. thou its only TWO strings. >_>

Yes bass and guitar is damn different! Bassists really cant afford to screw up. Hence i always get by my guitarist. Lol. But bass is a beautiful instrument! Like really beautiful. Smartest thing invented. =x

Hee lesser string does not mean more easy la. Lesser option :p
6 string bass vs 6 string guitar - like this compare more easy loh.

1. Both can be solo instrument or used in a band.
2. Both can strum (dun thk bassist use pick to strum on bass, usually fingers)
3. Both can play chords (bass need to play higher up the frets if not will sound muffle)
4. Both can be used to play lead
5. Both can slap
6. Both can pluck
7. Both can Tap
8. Both can plug in effects
9. Both can play with pick
10. Both can be groovy (depend how you play)
11. Both can create harmonics
12. Both can sing and play (usually more difficult for bass)
12. Usually both are different tuning, EADGBE (guitar) BEADGC (bass) You can do alter tuning for both.
13. Bass strings thicker (obvious one)
14. Bass shd take a shorter time to start jamming compare with guitar since a note is more easy to press than a chord

Usually when we started learning the instrument, we approach it differently.

Guitar - we learn strumming and chords
Bass - we learn 2 finger technique/pick and the notes on fretboard

Guitar see a chord just strum it and Bass see a chord just play root note (talking abt usual beginners.. since so many pros here tt might use other creative methods)

People alway tell bassist to play with drummer, to create a solid groove. Actually, same for all instrument to play in time together la. Drummer can go too fast or too slow one leh.. experience ones diff la.

One more similarity for some that started learning these 2 instruments is only know how to read tabs :p

Cheers

About difficulty between the two... I feel that it depends on the individual. I'm primarily a guitarist though I also play the bass and for me, bass is more difficult because your rhythm must be very good. And playing with fingers is a whole lot harder than using a pick. Furthermore, on a bass, the pick tends to fly off more easily. My experience... Does not apply to everyone.

now for the simple answer:

the main function of extra strings is to play chords.

bass is always more difficult to play than the guitar because of its physical limitations; longer scale, larger fret spacing, larger string spacing, heavier strings, bigger neck.

hence everything you do on a guitar will be harder on the bass. so your initial assumption that bass is easier than guitar is false to begin with.

alot of the things everyone has mentioned has to do with the music, not the instrument. that is the limitation of the composer rather than the bass.

of course la..the bass is easier....playing bass is chicken la....anybody can play the bass!!

it only has 4 strings (if its a 4 string bass) and tuned, E,A,D,G.....no need to worry about the B and E strings.....

on the bass you only play the root note....i.e. if the guitar player plays E chord you only play E note....but you might be caught in a dilemma as to whether its the open E or the E on the A string, E on the D string or E on the G string....but nevertheless JUST play the open E...

the beauty about this magical E is that its the SAME 'E' regardless if its a major or minor chord that the guitar player is playing...so if you guitar guy plays Eminor7#9...you still can play E on tthe open string...and you dont need to fret the note even....

this is just one of the lessons covered in Sgt Aquanaut's Bass guitar and performance tutoring programme.
you will learn to you SLAP the bass in 20 minutes or you will get paid one dollar for wasting your time...it IS guaranteed.

so sign up for you personal sessions.....

Well-said brother. Let's see a guitarist do a

on a bass guitar in rapid succession. Bet he can't last long. Maybe can't even do a clean note.
