Me abit boh-liao (boring). Hope this is something fresh about something old:

I actually bought the BOSS DS-1 three times:

1997: I was a total noob, got to know the BOSS DS-1 is almost like the first effects pedal to buy right after an electric guitar. So, i got one from my army camp mate for $50. Sold it after 2 years, and i think it was a MIJ. *heart pain*

2002: After a long series of digital multi-effects, I decided it's time to go back to analog... so, I bought a 2nd-handed DS-1, again. Sold it after a year.

2005: Luther ads got good bargains on DS-1... a sudden peacful GAS swept thru' me... yes, bought it again, but sold it after 6 months...

2006: eyeing on a Keeley one... 8)

I think i'm not alone when it comes to the DS-1.

I am guilty of such a thing.

I got the DS1 brand new about 3 yrs back, my 1st distortion pedal. WOW. YEAH!!!

I kept it in its box after that for some time.

Discovered Randolf.
Modded it.
Used it for some time.
Kept it in its box again.
Sold it.

Bought a 2nd hand beaten to death DS1.
Gave it to Randolf.

Got a 2nd hand Analogman modded DS1.
I think its one of the best mods that retain the DS1-ness.
Sold it to the guitarist of Ronin.

Bought back my old 1st DS1, that was modded.
Traded it off for some other pedal.

Got an MIJ DS1 for free.
Keeping it, its at least a 1970s DS1, one of the first batches.. and its THE DS1 for me.

Thing is... the first time I got the DS1 was because of hype. Because reviews on harmony central rocked. I couldn't understand why it sucked so bad so bad.

But it had this tone I wanted... this sustain and thickness thingy... i mean, hell a big muff could do it, but they are just different...

So now I'm sold on my MIJ DS1, i think thats it for me. I can do the Satch & Vai tones straight out of it! *kidding*

For me 3 x . . . 1st time buy way back dunnoe how long ago, dunnoe how to use then sell . . .

2nd time bought was last year end Swee Lee sale, end up selling cuz chg to PodXTLive.

Yesterday, I re-bought it from a SOFTie & I am gonna keep it by my side no matter wat.

erm...none..nv owned a DS1 b4..haha...

i don't get hw some of y'guys can buy the stock DS1 over & over...
if u liked it the 1st time y sell it..?

 seriously, i don't know why, but i think it's a form of GAS.
hey Stillborn, interesting, why not give the DS-1 a try?
somehow like what ShredCow shared, i find the DS-1 unique and will always like to return to it even though i've tried many other better distortion pedals. yeah man, we discover it over and over again.

i nvr modded my DS-1 b4, so this time i might do something diff with my DS-1.

im still browsing diff mods for DS-1.. hope i can find a suitable mod to get the kinda distortion tone im craving for . . .

At the end of the day neuro... the mods to the DS1 take it just so far... its got a character of its own, you can't mod it beyond that.. it wouldn't make sense to mod it into a totally different thing...

Do check out the Analogman DS1, its really a great mod, turns the DS1 into what it should have been. All the DS1-ness is there, but with more bass, more mids, smoother treble, louder, more gain, more screaming-ness, more wall of sound etc etc The tone control is much better too.

BUT.

Its best as a standalone pedal... really tremendous raw in your face rock tones... its noisy when used to boost, don't like it.

I use my DS-1s to stack to add more sustian and stuff, like a Big Muff...

+1

sqoobs: i guess me not having tried a DS1 is as strange as y'guys buyin' it 3X...lol.. (since its the most commonly used efx pedal in efx history..?)

but think i'd eventually try it some day .....quite happy with my GT2 & Tonebone rite now....

OT: still waiting to get my tonebone back from Randolf...
(Randolf yer hear..? )

ahhhh, GT2 and Tonebone,,, man, that explains. Good stuff you've got there Stillborn 8)

I used to put a MXR109 after the DS-1. While I can't do much about the DS-1's gain, the 6-band EQ really helped me to achieve some great tones.

Still on the DS-1, just to share one interesting mod i found 8O
