how do i get this guitar tone and sound?

Frusciante used a Strat on this particular song, confirmed. I read it. Probably through his Marshall stack, but I'm not too sure. Anyway you guys know that all John's gear is from before the 80s(not too sure bout the amps). He doesn't have a guitar that is produced after 1970+, the newest which I think would be his Jaguar. Talk about being a purist.

Hahaha...I would say, you'd have to be Johnny F to make that kind of tone...cause he's just that awesome. :P

But yeah, I've been searching for that tone since 2004 and I've given up since...haha..maybe I just suck.

Just look for live performances on Youtube and see what John used

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTO1noxfHmQ

Narrow down on the year it was recorded in the live version.
Google the equipment that John used that year, or even images of archive footage about John's setup and there u have it....

hope that helps~

with that said, im sure theres not too much going on in the solo, it depends on the body type and pickups of the guitar going thru an amp with slight gain. not that hard to achieve~

yea but his guitars are abit rare these days...even if u find them, they'd be selling for thousands on ebay. i dun think anyone who still holds a strat made during that period would wanna sell it =/

i didnt mean to get the EXACT strat that John plays obviously.
why would you even think that?

no i mean getting models similar to those he uses. as in models made in that era. those are like collectors item now lol

john frusciante uses vintage guitars and old marshall amps.. i dont know what amps they were exactly, but judging from what i heard...

its a very transparent, medium gain drive. has tons of prescence yet the guitar's tone still shine's through. it shines through so much that it sounds like a strat, not a tele. (which john also uses).

what you're looking for is a very transparent marshall type crunch. even so, i'm not sure if your strat's tone will still sound like a strat (hopefully you are using a strat!)
tones like these arent easy to nail, all the best!

Fender jaguar + JCM800

He used JTM45/JCM800/JMPs during the recording of the album

All half stacks at that era.

Volume control on guitar used to control gain.

yeah, I am using a strat.

Hmm, thanks for the feedback guys, i'll do my own research based on the feedback and see what i can come up with.

Cheers.

A strat will get you to sound 80+% with a JCM800 or similar amp.

A marshall MV or older amp with the bright cap can get you sounding very similar. Not the older more bassy amps though.

I'll add my two cents

Well, if you're a Fruschiante fan, you know he was heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix in terms of style and tone. Hendrix's signature tone was a Fender Strat into a cranked Marshall Plexi. That's pretty much what you have here.

Your best bet for recreating this sound is to use a Strat (or a Tele would do in a pinch) into a British-style tube amp; most Marshalls or a Vox AC30 would do well.

The key to get this tone is to keep the pre-amp section (gain) turned down low and the master volume CRANKED. It will definitely be loud. The dynamics come from the player and volume control on the guitar.

Getting tones you hear on studio recordings can be challenging when you have to play at bedroom/practice levels...

It's played with fingers. A strat (neck pup) into a clean amp with a nice low gain dirt pedal (a TS808 would work) will bring you there. The amp needs to break up on it's own a bit too.
