How did NS affect your practice?

I'm going in on monday. Personally I'm not worried about how it'll affect my guitar playing, cos I was never a good guitarist to begin with, even after all those years of playing. :p I should be able to catch up to my previously low standard should my playing indeed deteriorate further.

Another way is to allow your guitar playing to deteriorate, then simply work harder at it once you ORD and/or have enough time to play. You only have to do NS once in your life.

i can tell you it will definitely affect your playing.. i enlisted 4 days ago gona book back in tmr night and you know it just feels weird not playing for that few days : (

When you are posted out to your unit, after your BMT or whatever, put a guitar in your bunk. When you have the free time, you can strum all you want. Of course, don't bring your Gibsona, JEMs, PRSs or expensive ones lar.. haha. I had a cheapo acoustic, good enuf to entertain yourself and others.

It's also good to have one just in case you sign extra, SOL, or on duty whatsoever. :)

BMT, difficult. After that, it depends where you get posted to (and whether you stay in or out). Also depends on your Pes status. I picked up the guitar when I was in NS. From having never played a guitar before to be able to play Cavatina - all within the time of NS. Quite a feat! There's enough time. That was...20 years ago. NS must be better nowadays than it was in the past.

Hey, after bmt you should be able to play guitar regularly in camp again.

and after the first year, maybe you will find that you have more free time in camp for playing guitar than when you were in school! just have to ta through the training phase.

All of you going in last week/this week, probably enhanced batch, so don't bother bringing in a guitar for BMT. Whatever little free time you have you'll want to sleep, haha. Those coming in on Thursday... maybe you'll see me  muhahaha

But anyway, after BMT you'll have more time and freedom in whichever unit and most likely can bring a guitar in. Just get a cheap acoustic. I sometimes bring an electric and headphone amp. But that's if you die die want to practice electric... if not an acoustic is more fun anyway you can play for your friends to hear.

Just beware that every mother's son will ask you to teach them some lame song so they can go out and show the girlfriend...

bpt for me instead :p

my guitar skill was still the same after my 2 week confinement, i did brought an acoustic to camp after my field camp because it would be only after field camp then you will have a little more free time. Unit life will have more than enough time for you to practice.

Put it this way .. Before I entered the army, I was a guitarist. After ORD I'm now looking to sell off my equipment. Didn't get to practice where I was. Stay-in has a great way of making you too sian to do anything.

NS did affect on the days when life was just too tiring all you can think of is sleep.

but otherwise it never did affect, I self studied or invent ideas and lived in my own world. after bmt , I met this campmate who was literally airdrumming by himself and eventually his band did recording with me as well.

it's all in the mind.

well if you have a genuine passion for music or the guitar. Nothing will stop you

look at it this way, after 2 years of NS .if somehow you abandon the guitar , it just means that perhaps you're not cut out to play the guitar.

Good thing police only make you stay in at most 6 months. Cherished the time but not missing it!

Hey, I've heard that before and I think it's kinda true. Luckily I didn't face such a problem, I had a burning desire to play even in bmt, and in the end i managed to pay for recruits night, booking in tekong with an electric guitar and a pedal case as a recruit felt kinda weird! haha.

ah yeah, find out which company is organising recruits night and see if you can get any contacts or stuff with the organising team or specs. I forgot how i managed to bypass the audition stage but I knew it was good cause i could miss out some of the trainings for "band practise" at ninja company! ^^ (ok given i was from leopard, quite welfare)

This is why the iRig should be sold in Singapore. Can bring to camp to practice electric guitar.:)
Currently I'm an NSF, and weekday practice comes by very rarely but somehow I realise that NS made me practice more when I get the free time. NS life makes alot of difference to your freedom but it also depends on how you juggle your responsibilities. Just relax.
