Help with connection via USB (keyboard)

Hello, okay, so here's the thing.

I have problems connecting my keyboard via USB to my macbook. I've installed the required software but the laptop doesn't seem to detect my keyboard connection at all. (e.g using garageband)

Does this mean that I have to connect via MIDI cables?

thanks in advance. :)

what keyboad would that be? Keyboard with its own sound engine or midi controller keyboard with no in build sound

if its keyboard with in build sound, you dont have to use usb cable, unless you wanna use the keyboard as midi controller. If just wanna use the keyboard and record the sound into garageband, you need an audio interface(external soundcard for audio recording purpose).

Midi connection doesnt involve sound at all, it consist of digital instruction to software, telling it what to do/trigger certain function etc. Once the "instruction"(action of pressing keyboard, knob turning or modwheel adjustment) is given to the software/softsynth, digital signal will then be sent to the soundcard, go through digital to analog conversion, then playback as sound, which we hear.

if its a midi controller keyboard with no in build sound, the usb connection is better than using midi cable. One usb cable is equal to multiple midi cables connected between the midi device and computer. Basically your midi input and output port are all connected via one usb cable.
