Help on choosing a cab?

Hi there, i'm pretty new a selecting the right cab for the amp that i'm gonna buy. I'm thinking of getting an Engl Savage 120 and noticed that the manufacturers do produce Engl cabs. I'm just not sure abt it and i've had friends telling me that different cabs colour the true sound of your amp, which is something i don't wanna do.

The kind of music that I'm playing varies from heavy metal, rock and some blues.

There are only 2 types of 4x12's that Engl are producing...

1.Engl Vintage 4x12 Slant/Straight - comprising of v30s or v60s celestion speakers

2. Engl XXL 4x12 Cabinet - comprising of v30s celestion speakers

What's the difference between a v30 or v60 speaker?
I'm also wondering if anyones got any clean samples of Engl's Savage 120, don't seem to find any at Derrick B.'s site.

If there are recomendations on cabs, please do advise me.....

most of the engl users playing metal seem to go for the XXL cab i think. are you ordering from rocksolidamps? they don't ship outside US and canada. there is an australian distributor though but way overpriced.

There's a distributor in Melbourne, I've emailed him and waiting for a response. And most of the info I've got is from Rocksolidamps..........but if i'm odering the amp it'll probably from Germany or the Distributor Australia.Definitely not from America...Hmm I'm currently residing in Perth, hope the shipping within the same country wouldn't be that overpriced.

the V-30s distort easily so you get driven tones at lower volume settings. i used to own a 4X12 V-30 equipped Fender cab & feel that they lack bass for those who peddle low notes on the guitar.

however, when it comes to cabs, as i've found out over the years, it's not about the brand names/ driver brands, it's what your like to hear. Peavey cabs are using their own in-house drivers (eg: the Blue Marvel) & they sound fantastic.

Hmm. V30s are pretty much the norm for high gain amps nowadays. The mesa boogie equivalent of your belowed mentioned would be worth taking alook.

THD cabs are worth checking out. One of the best cabs around. I think they have a 4x12 out recently.

Hey skidzophonics, V30s does distort easily at lower volumes but I wouldn't advise you to try a Fender cab and make a final judgement on how well the speakers sound as Fender cabs are not known for their bass response.

If it's possible, go try out Bogner, Marshall, Rivera and VHT (Common names that are probably available where you live). You could also try other brands/makers that have the speaker configuration you favour. From there, you can judge for yourself how a V30s sound. Bare in mind that V30s are pre loaded in older VHT cabs. I'm not sure if they are still available now for the newer ones.

Try multiple types/brands of cabs to make a good comparison then judge for yourself. It's really a matter of personal preference.

As for the difference between V30s and V60s. From what I've read and heard through clips, the V60s seems to have a bigger bass response. Compliments the ENGLs very very well. That's about it but then again, I have never tried one personally to make a final judgement. So it's kinda hard to give a definite answer.

Hope you find what you looking for man. Gd luck buddy 8)

Speakers and amps have gone the way from Sound Reproduction to Sound Production i.e. they are designed to enhance a specific aspect of your tone.

If you can, try out various speakers and cabinets, individual speakers sound different in different cabs i.e. the way speakers are loaded (front-loaded vs rear mounted), open back vs 3/4 back or closed back, brich material vs others, cab dimensions, etc.

For your type of music, check out G12Hs, Greenback's in addition to V30s. Celestion info is here http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/classic/index.asp

Also check out the Weber and Eminence speakers with similar voicings.
