I've gone overseas for a period of time and left my bass untouched... Now that i'm back, I realised the knobs are hard to turn. any idea on how I could get it back to its good old shape? Thanks a lot.

remove knobs,

spray copious amounts of CONTACT CLEANER ...(NEVER EVER USE WD40) into the gaps of the pot and slowly turn with pliers till fully functional again.

Work slow and steady....never rush or turn too hard....

if active bass - check for battery corrosion etc

all else fails bring to Dan Enterprise at 4th floor Peninsula Shpng Ctr - he's the experat at this kinda thing - would take 10 mins tops!

uhh...coz they are OIL BASED?

You are correct. WD-40 is a lubricant like oil and is also conductive. It will mess up the resistivity of the pots. Contact cleaners are safe for cleaning and it dries up easily too. Its very useful and does not affect the paint or anything to your bass/guitar.
