be composer:):-D:D

it's hard to survive as a composer and make a living out of royalties. u either make it big; or nothing at all in Singapore.

- when u're young, do what u hv to do.

- h'ever, when u're old, do the things u like to do, not the things that u hv to do.

also, try all kinda of jobs if possible in order to find your interest. once u find out what u are good at and wat u enjoy doing, stick on to it.

if u hv the passion, u will like the job. when u like the job you will serve with passion, this will lead u to excel in what u are doing; and naturally, this will lead to promotion and u will make it to the top.

other factors that will hinder u : company with no prospect or useless colleagues, quit and look for greener pastures.

but, do note: the greener pastures may look green, but underneath may hv lots of cow dung. u dun wanna get into deeper shit. do research and do social network. it might open up to new / unexpected opportunities...

last but not least, if all else fails, be your own boss. but u need to hv a biz idea and plan... something u can create and sell and pple will desire.

above are theory, i hv not tried it myself whether it will work practically. try at own risk....

if work becomes fun and you keep on doing what is fun in order to attain enjoyment, aren't you becoming a workaholic in some sense?

wyldeboon's job is a form of "efficient working" in today's society.
economy bad, settle for any job, but work effort at its worst. keng wherever can keng.
economy good, keng lesser, but of course if you like your job or the most comfortable you can get, work when there's a stack of crap on your table.
but in whatever economy, workplace must have internet so can surf soft.com.sg so time at work passes faster lol RIGHT ALL?!

like what sid4iwpa said , what he says about composing is very true. that's why there'll be producers (seems) almost desperately trying to promote/overhype themselves, when the real fact is they're just doing what they can to continue their passion. any band would promote themselves shamelessly to try make it big and the dream is to earn a living as a touring musician and still pay off bills.

but to requote what sid4iwpa said in my own context :
when you're young do whatever you can do cos you got the energy.
by the time you approach older age, you'll know what you really want in life. as most singaporeans are living their parents' lives or simply someone else's expectations or comparisons.

no matter what, just keep upgrading/equipping yourself with multiple skills. be it studies, be it self study, be it experience or confidence. I always say singaporeans are talented in the sense that we all can multitask well, and singaporean musicians even better, we lead double/triple lives and this discussion had appeared in past soft threads before but i can't find it now lol.

1) you gotta work your 9to5 for the $$$ and cheer yourself up by GASing.
2) you quit your 9to5, and try to simply do what you love, but risk converting what is fun into work! and if you fail, you got nothing. (except experience)
3) you retain financial security in your 9to5, and from 6to12 you do what you love on a serious note hoping you'll get your big break = funktastic said : workaholic. I'm this example. I gotta go monthly treatment on my torn ligament in my right feet but I even got the TCM practitioner to do acupuncture for my ears/improved hearing. music/audio has literally been integrated into my lifestyle. but really ask yourself : DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING BETTER TO DO IN SINGAPORE?
if you work hard for your dreams, you're a workaholic
if you quit and relak do nothing, you're a jobless bum
if you relax do nothing and sponge off your parents and jobless , you're a total loser.
if you work as your parents's dreams (lawyer/doctor etc) and excelled, but only to quit a $5digit salary for an income 5 times lesser but your passion + freedom, you're stupid but a really happy stupid fella and I read about a few of these guys on the papers.
if you plan to start your own business, make sure you do calculated risks avoid being in major debt which you can't recover from should you fail. (P.S : don't give me the all business have risks bs. then it makes no difference from going down to the new casino and dump your life savings on the roulette.)
which one would you pick?

to TS : I'm stubborn in a sense that , I have a "ibochap" attitude including just simply running over any obstacle that gets in my way in a "just do it. regret later" sense. If you got no options : create one. if you got no time, make time.if you got no talent, work hard so you "appear to have talent" (demoralising).if you got no experience, get out there and get experience. if you hate your job, quit it.so when a couple of years later should you create another thread saying "I hate my passion, regret quitting my job" , then your mind will be convinced to not hate and cherish working commitment.all win win situation.

*spoof of newspaper writer column*
Post writer is a 26+ year old married man, PSLE qualifications with multiple skills & job experiences currently working as a office day job, a multiple freelance jobs with audio being his passion and been at it for 12 years now,but planning out different business ideas lately so he can become his own boss and work for anyone he feels like.

For a few years, I've been doing things that is totally irrelevant to my expertise. From an Electrical Engineering graduate to something that we call Bio-technology. Worst of all, I hate this job. Nothing much I can do as that's my main source of income. Tried applying other opportunities but to no avail. And music kept me going....I do music relief sometimes when required. The money not that much but I enjoy doing so. And when there's no music job/assignment I jammed with my band just to de-stress. Meet up some softies/friends hang-out...that kinda thing. Modify my guitars and things like that.

And what I'm getting now is just 20%, 13 years ago what I am paid for. Can't complain....have to compete to younger people and foreign talents. And so I am no more competing, just be happy what I have. That's how many Singaporean go through.

Bless be!

Allow me to contribute.

Ever since I finished NS 6 years ago, been struggling to find jobs that I really like and can put my heart and soul into. Mostly all the jobs I've been thru were just plain office jobs...the last job I had was the longest I had ever stayed in to gain experience and $$$ and I finally quit after some crappy office politic events. That was almost 12 mths ago when the financial crisis was at its peak.

Since that day when I quit, been staying at home for about 9mths looking for jobs. Tat was the most toturing period I had ever been, not working and staying at home most of the time can really make ur mind and imagination go wild. Finally, got many job offer calls last Nov and ended up working in a temp job for 2mths.

Today, I'm working in a position that I consider the "one". And nope, its got nothing to do with music. Its something that I'm really comfortable in and I'm willing to excel and work hard in this one. The $$$ isn't that great but in my heart, I knew this was the one that I'm happy in. In fact, every day, I look forward to work. At least, I get to move around and not just be confined to a desk doing paperwork. I hope to be given a long term position soon since I'm currently under probation. :)

To TS, if u despise ur job so much, its time to look elsewhere and look for a job where u can excel and be comfortable in for a very long time. It took me a long time but I think I have finally found it :) All the best!

Well, Jobs are neccessary to put food on ur table and yup, provide u with the finances for GASing :)

Its life afterall. To find ur prince/princess, u gotta kiss the frog. Jobs are like kissing frogs. If u kiss the 1st frog and it doesn't becomes a prince/princess, well, u juz gotta keep kissing frogs till u find one. Cos this is life, it ain't perfect, some ppl get their prince/princess at the 1st kiss, some ppl need a few tries.

Anyway, no harm in kissing frogs(jobs) cos end of the day, u'll gain

1) $$ ( Esp important for ppl who GAS )
2) Work Experience
3) Skills

Well, if this current job doesn't suits u, dun think its a waste cos at least u found out that ur current job don't suit u. :)

Just like wat Thomas Edison said
"I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. "

Stay Happy Dude.
If all else fails, Music will still get u going~!
