again, pickups do not make your sound sound like malmsteen,

i beg to differ.
Although the pickup seems not so crucial in getting the right tone, you can't deny it is the most important thing in the chain to get that sound. Everything in the chain makes the tone different, to me.
As a sound engineer once told me.. "even if you get the exact equipment and you have the same level of guitar skill or even if you are that guy himself, i can still make you sound like someone else easily". That means, every single part in the chain is important to get the exact sound you are looking for! So let's not forget that the records you heard are carefully mixed and mastered.

i think the best way to go is a POD. you can try tweaking the presets and approximate his tone from there. And play fenders, ibanez guitars dont really give you that top end bite that malmsteem gets from his hs-3 and yjm equipped fenders.
You'll need his vintage marshall mk2 heads, which are impossible to find in the market now.

I dont think dhalif's tone sounds like malmsteen at all.... I mean he's a great player and all but im hell sure he wouldnt want to be called a malmsteen clone, cos he has his own unique sound.
Well i wouldnt mind shelling out for a vintage MK2 if i had the cash....cos its still cheaper than an original Trainwreck Express, my dream amp....

scalloping your fretboard might bring you closer to his tone 
. a strat would be a better option as compared to an RG in this case considering the fact that they are made from different wood.

you will not get malmsteen's tone even with this combination cos:
1. You'r not Malmy
2. You dont play fender
3. Evos are what vai uses
4. Ibanez guitars are basswood
5. You don own his vintage Mk2 marshall stacks
6. You'r not malmy
7. Even if you learn all his licks and play his songs, you'll still sound different, ak joe stump...
So at the end of the day....its the tone YOU LIKE that matters rather than trying to emulate somebody else.
$200 worth.

thnks guys...im not really trying to emulate him completely..its just that i wanna know how he gets that sounds and stuff as to his pickups and all..but thnks to everbody who helped! dun get me wrong coz i'm just askin how he achieves his tone..i have my own tone already and was just curious?..hahaha

aiyoh cut this guy some slack. I'm sure he is just using malmsteen's tone as reference & not trying to be a 100% clone. I mean, I'm sure a whole lot of people love his tone. its something like the tone in their head that they want to achieve or get close to.

yup and i believe the ts likes malmsteens tone. i always chase my idols tone actually.. though i know i will nvr ever be able to get close to his tone even if i had all the money in the world, its nice to know i'm somewhere close and sometimes it gives u that feeling that i cant really describe.
i honestly dont see a problem with chasing someones tone. if you like it why not? thats why i get a little offended when ppl tell me GET YOUR OWN TONE dont copy others.
his tone has very very little gain.. his pickups are very low output.. to achieve something close to that is to have low output coils and then cranking up on the amp side.. if you have regular buckers u cant get it..,not even close.
For example, if you have a pod xt live this is what you do.. you get probably the cleanest marshall sound like a plexi 45 for example and use screamer on stomp to slightly satchurate the amp sound and get the sustain going. after that, its all in the playing. because IT IS indeed hard to play with his settings. super low output.. but anyhow.. good luck in your journey in search of your tone tone t o n e t o n e T O N E T O N E E. . . . .... there's a difference with your approach. You are saying you dont have a problem using someone else's tone as a role model. To you, its like a guideline. And trust me, you will be satisfied cos at the end of the day you would have been able to achieve your desired tone. Thats fine by me.
The TS implies that he wants to copy malmsteen's tone, er tone for tone,? thats kind of impossible cos he dosent own malmsteen's gear, and also, malmsteem has his own unique touch that only his fingers can replicate.
I'm just being realistic. But, if it makes you happy, just do it!
