pros - red colour, lots of knobs, lots of sliders, hip to be to
use usb-midi controller, hip to use software synth/sampler,
open concept for wide usage.
cons - made in China, ever heard from a Citymusic salesguy,
his CME8 broke down on him when he needs it for a gig.
oh yes! nowadays is open system with a computer/mac
running a sequencer software adding your required
softsynths and samplers.
good for everyone, centralised computing and processing;
for unforseen circumstances you may need a mirrored site
for diaster recovery for your hours and hours of music data
if your computer system ever crashed on you - 'blue screen of death' ???
too bad many sequencing software don't support RAIDS, eg Pro Tools !
it's true - no more gear, no more hardware.
WHAT YOU NEED IS A POWERFUL COMPUTER
WITH HIGH PROCESSING POWER AND HIGH RAM
MEMORY POWER !!! and of course a usb-midi controller.
add the software with the sounds as you need.
KORG OASYS concept is an open system where
the OS can be upgraded and new synth engines can be
added. OASYS is running Linux OS on a P4 2.8 GHz CPU,
40Gb HDD with high expandable RAM.
Looks like KORG realized the market requirements and introduced
the OASYS to compete with the software market as like
Digidesign Pro Tools and TC powercore.
So what's next for Roland and Yamaha ???
These two companies make other successful
products like digital piano, pro audio besides
synth workstation, so probably not much
innovation from them in this area.
