Hi there! Im interested in playing the electric guitar but my budget is quite tight as im still in secondary school, and my current budget is around $300~$400. Can i have some advice on what brand of guitar should i choose that is suitable for beginners? And the type of music i wanna play is Rock or JRock. Thanks in advance!
(Im not sure if here's the correct section to post, sorry if i posted at the wrong section)

u could try timbre and smash guitars, or a squier guitar would do fine too. does that budget include ur guitar, cables and accessories?

u can get $350 for everything if u get the starter kits. the timbre sr200 in sv is worth checking out. guitar, amp, cable, strap even tuner and picks are provided. i've tried the guitar and its pretty decent. the amp isnt very good but since u're on a tight budget and the guitar itself is alr worth the package price, i think its worth it. :)

hmmm but u havent told us what genre u'll be foraging into yet lol. so the suggestion was basically a stab in the dark -_-

I guess i forgot to put it in :p
But i dont know how to put it, but it would be okay for me if the guitar is able to be used to play songs from antic cafe and the gazette :)

hmmm then u prob wanna use a more versitile guitar. try the smash s2 lite also from sv solid tone for distortion can be found in the bridge for all the gazette riffs. as for the amp, u can try looking ard on the buy and sell market. loads of cheap starter amps out there. but then again, do bring someone familiar with guitars down to test out for u. i cant really vouch for other brands cos most dont come under ur budget and i havent tried the lesser known brands in other shops so just my $0.02 :)

Well, TBH i never liked starter kits. For 350, you can get a LTD 50 series. Prob also an Ibanez Gio on sale maybe? Could probably raise your budget abit to 400 and get a Rally Singlecut? Who knows? So many possibilities with that extra 50 bucks :)

My suggestion is, raise your budget just a'lil bit, and get something you'll be happy with and will last you, no point spending 350 now and another who knows... 700 later on a better guitar? Better to spend 400-500 on a guitar now and last you a lot longer than that 350 guitar and have to spend more to upgrade.

Incidentally, check out the 2nd hand guitars available. Could prob find an Ibanez SA120 or others within your price range

If its better to raise my budget by $50, its still possible for me :)
But is it only on the guitar?

It all really depends on which guitar you buy. If you buy a 400 dollar guitar, you wont have any money for amp and the rest hahaha. Incidentally if you raise your budget to 400 for the rest. You only have about 250 give or take for the guitar, and that would probably get you the smash S2 or KGarage guitars or maybe even Craftsman guitars.

SPEAKING of craftsman, you should check them out.

You can mix and match any Craftman guitar. It comes with a Line 6 Spider IV amp.
Personally, i'd go for the ST-130 or the EG- 95. Good luck yo! :)

Again, dont buy it cause its cheap. Buy it cause you LIKE it. If you don't like it, dont buy, there are plenty of other alternatives that are available. Search up old threads and read them, very helpful :)

My post above said i dont really like Starter Packs, cause usually they give a shit amp, but this one should be okay :)

If you happen to buy the Craftsman package, for me lah. I dont expect much from the strap + bag and may conk out very soon haha

I second that. The spiders are worth the $$.
But I wld think twice abt getting a gtr with a Floyd Rose bridge (the EG-95) as a beginner gtr.
Floyds are a headache if you're just starting out. Check out my review of the EG-95 in the Guitar Reviews section.

Go for a fixed bridged one for now (like the ST-30, ST-130, the GS series or EG-310 for example).

I like the ST-30 one, but is it suitable for jrock? :o

You might wanna avoid the guitars like EG95 with Floyd Rose bridge. Assuming you have interest to learn Gazette's songs, a non-floyd rose bridge guitar will be better since you likely have to drop tune on some songs.

For the music you intend to play, you will likely prefer a guitar with bridge humbucker and 24 frets neck. So you might want to get the craftsman package but change the guitar to EG90.

or EG310 also can:

Im not much of a SID fan although i like majority of their songs.
Erm, may i ask where can i get the EG310?

Changing from ST-30 to EG310 would likely have a slight upcharge but should still be within your budget. Best to give them a call to ask first.

I think if you up your budget a little bit more the Ibanez RG321MH should be within reach, its one of the most versatile and value-for-money guitars out there IMHO. I also second the Timbre SR200, don't be fooled by the price, the stock pickups on offer are by far the best stock pickups i've ever heard. They put the stock pickups on other guitars below 700 to shame IMHO. My reasons for recommending the RG321MH:

1. Nice neck. The Wizard II neck is 1 of the most playable necks out there, i'm sure many others will agree. Very skinny and fast, you won't be experiencing hand cramps unless you're doing some serious shredding for a long time.

2. Okay stock pickups. I don't like the INF series of pickups, i think they sound muddy and rather squealy BUT they are most than ample for most beginner guitarists (apologies if you're not one).

3. Fixed bridge. We've all heard nightmare stories from people who got FRs on their first guitars, i've had problems with mine even though its an Ibanez EDGE Pro II. Not saying that EDGEs are problematic in general, in fact they are much less so than other incarnations BUT as a beginner you likely won't know how to operate the thing and when some crops up, and you try to fix, likely you'll end up screwing it up even more. Fixed bridges are rather less complicated, no-frills and simple. If you're not in the market for a guitar with whammy capabilities, the RG321's fixed bridge is one of the ways to go.

400 is only for the guitar right? Trying to keep a low budget but sometimes, keeping budget isn't the best choice. Result to the Craftsman or Timbre at last resort if you really are low on cash.

*Hint the ST-130 has a Humbucker in the bridge and looks good :P
