Height of strings

Is the bass side supposed to be higher than the treble side? Also, how high are the strings supposed to be from the end of the freatboard for the action to be considered high?

gibson factory settings are higher on bass 5/64" to 3/64" on treble, both at 12th fret.

fender factory settings have both sides the same height, 4/64" at 17th fret.

Depends on your personal preference as what some have mentioned.

Light pickers like say, Satch, his action is ridiculously low.

Harder pickers like say, Vai, has medium high action.

And you see, how action translate to how much actions you do on stage?

elliptical ....

"As guitar strings vibrate in an elliptical pattern, it is usually desirable for a guitar neck to have a slight curvature, to allow each string to vibrate along its full length."

High Action-

PROS -Loud volume , sharp tones, Richer sound
CONS-Requires force to press, Hard to play a fast run

Low Action-

PROS - Easy to press, Easy to play a fast run
CONS - Soft volume, "Buzz" more likely to happen

Lifted from the internet :D

ditto ShredCow- action relates to how you play your guitar. in this case, it's good to own more than one guitar to address your (different) playing needs.

pertaining to low action, if you experience string buzz, it's not a bad thing...

i prefer to set my high e string highest on action, the rest have slight difference from low e being the second higher and going down alittle each for each string except high e
