The "white opaque" skins U mentioned are "coated" heads.
Most commonly used is Remo Weatherking Coated Ambassador proven for its versatility.
U could experiment with various "coated" heads from other manufacturers ; Evans or Aquarians which are available in our sunny island.
Don't be afraid to test out with various heads if $$$ is not an issue as U might find by using different heads will produce different snare tones and sounds.
Not being bias on watsoever but from experience. Was a fan of Remo sometime ago till couple of years back where i stucked wif Evans. Seems like Remo heads has suffer in terms of durability lately. If u like those Ambassador, can try Evans Genera HD Dry and of cos, heads are the main thing tat affect snare sound, besides the obvious snare construction, materials and tuning.
wait wait guys i'm sorry. i said wrongly haha. i meant Evans. i want to go for the Evans skins. heh i have no idea why i typed Remo. but yeah thanks for the advice.
Then u have to get a head tat has got muffling/dampening elements to it, like Evans Genera HD Dry or Genera Dry which has underside ring to minimize overtones and dry vents tat further eliminates the higher frequencies. As for Remo's head, the Powerstroke series are the one tat provide dampening abilities.
i recommend not getting a head thts muffled. cause if u get a really ringing head u can muffle it urself with zero rings or tape, but if u wanted a ringier sound for ur muffled head its gonna be alot harder to acheive.
if u have to have some muffling i feel the evans reverse dot is pretty good, cause it just adds alittle muffling and u can play brushes on it as well cause the dot is on the otherside.
we shld get a review page going dun u think?
Evans Genera HD Dry yea? must check it out. anyone knows the price?
gambatak: i have one of those snares too. since the evans genera is geting good reviews, you should try it. i put moongels on them as well as rings, it doesnt really swound loud.
gambatak : i have a stagestar too. honestly, i quite like the sound for a home kit. I did put a single moongel near the edgeof the rim...and also...a piece of cloth that is half in the shell and out on the snare head. this is so the cloth bounces up abit and falls to dampen the overtones abit. head: remo ambassador
Can't quite remember how much i got it for but my discounts are always slightly more, so if u all wan, can get for u guys. Am tinkin of gettin an Evans hydraulic head for my snare, seems like a good studio, enclosed area head and the blackness of it gona be cool together wif my black mirra finish snare..
icic, may drop by sometime there soon. bliss i wonder if u can give any reviews abt pst series? looking at the pst 5's over here. whats the diff compared to samatyas is what i really wanan know.
Ok, i've tested in-depth on the PST3 and 5, hell in fact i've tested most of Paiste as im a freak of theirs, so ya. For the PST3 and 5, firstly, their packaged pricing is 300 plus for PST3 and PST5 slightly over 600 before discount. Tis set consist of a hi-hat, crash and ride. Why the huge difference u mite ask. Oh hell they are different sound-wise. The main foundation lies in the fact tat PST3 uses brass copper alloy while the PST5 uses 2002 bronze, the same one as their popular-as-hell 2002 professional series, though not as wide in terms of sound spectrum as compared to their highest-end patented Signature bronze, they are still darn great, and cos of tis, the sound difference between 3 and 5 is discernible right out. Since brass usually has a bright characteristics with the highs being the dominant frequency, PST3 really roars, bright and sounded thrashy wif lots of highs emanating thruout the spectrum. As for PST5, damn, they are musical. A hit will generate a warm mixture of mids and highs wif subtle lows for an all-round musical tone. If i were to choose, its a no-brainer tat i save up a bit more and go for the 5s, unless of cos, ur inclined towards cymbals tat has lots of high frequencies, way bright and kinda growly and thrashy. Hope tis mini review helps ya..
how much can u get the pst 5's for with ur discounts? im really coonsidering going down to try them out. also, anyone has ideas abt the diff compared to samatyas?
