HDB-Friendly Guitar Amplifier

Hi all.

My Marshall MG30DFX is finally dying on me, clean channel is no longer functioning properly, vol/bass/tone isn't responding well anymore.

Am in the journey for hunting another amp. Hoping to get something that takes pedals well and is HDB friendly. Wouldn't mind if it only has 1 clean channel but most importantly the budget is below 1k? :) Low wattage tube amps are welcomed too!

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

PS: I'm in the hunt for a Jazz Chorus 77 or 120. Let me know if you have one for sale :)

hi sorry to hijack, but i'm looking for something similar.don't feel like starting another thread.
i also wanna see if there're any HDB-friendly amps with good cleans and can take pedals well.
i'm thinking of getting a Vox Pathfinder.retails @ $148 at City Music.any comments?

Hey man,

For under $1k, there's actually quite a lot of options bro.

The Epiphone Valve Junior is pretty good, and there's a whole lot of mods you can do to it to make it even better. Very simple amp, 1 knob does it all. Lol. This amp actually gets pretty loud btw.

The Sound Drive 112 is great. If you want more power than the 612 would be just nice, although 60W might not be very HDB friendly.

There is one practice amp that has quite amazed me. The Kustom 12Gauge. And it's under $300! The onboard effects are pretty good too.

Eh btw bro, a Roaldn JC-120 is absolutely NOT HDB friendly. I used to own one, it doesn't sound that great at low volumes. I'd have to bring it up to at least 9o'clock to get it to open up nicely for recording. And at 9o'clock I can feel my table rumble. So imho, definitely a nono unless you have an isolation cabinet for the amp while recording.

How about u buy my univalve :D for $1k you can have the head. Haha.

Cheers!

For small tube amp u can read here, something i found while im doing research.

Personally using the vox ac4tv, usually 1/4watt @ 12oclock volume to give it an overdrive sound is already quite loud....

U can go try the vox ac4 tv8 which has 1/10 watt.

i'm in a similar situation bro hah...and i'm considering getting a Blackstar HT5 head + cab...but i'm as unsure as u if it's too loud for HDB

Hmmm, according to my friend,HDB flat shouldn't be a problem if you are using low-watters.Just close windows, doors, and 75% of the sound reduced.According to HIM.
I'm also living in a HDB 5-room flat.9th story.Got a 15Watter,going to try have my distortion channel's volume louder tomorrow morning, trying out everything I suggested up there, and see if it wakes anyone.

Using a 100W solid state (Roland RG100SC) and a 15W tube (Vox Night Train).

Can get good tones at reasonable volumes (which is pretty loud).. Used either amps in performances/studio and the tones are pretty similar.. So what makes you think a 15W solid state would be unsuitable at bedroom levels?

Good suggestion would be as mentioned, Vox AC4tv.. Great amp for cleans, especially with the bell-like chime Vox is famous for.. OD may be a little too muddy.. A change of tubes would improve performance tremendously.. Plus it can double as a small club room amp! Other suggestions would be Vox AD series, Sound Drive SG series, Randall RG series and Roland Cube series.. I personally dislike Ibanez Toneblasters, Marshall MG series and Laney LV series as they really sound like practice amps.. The others mentioned sound decent enough for me to do a recording on..

I'm happy with my home set-up since I can use either amps for performances AND bedroom practice..

How does those 5watter tube amp sound to you guys?

Looking at BlackStar, Epiphone Valve Jr, BlackHeart, Vox and etc.

Will even open my options for Ceriatone or other brands.

Many a times I have to re-tweak my pedals quite drastically when I'm doing Live/Jams as compared to practicing at home with my Marshall MG30.

Is it not possible to get something close? Unless I get a mid-watter amp and crank it up? So to get close to the tone when I'm doing live/jams?

The AC4TV combo is the best balance between price/functionality/sound quality. As for playing live, you'll have to consider whether or not those occasions justify buying a large amp. Renting could very well suffice if you have one gig a year or something. Otherwise there's always the option of going direct or using the backline amp. No point having a huge $1000 amp at home if you hardly get to crank it IMO.

ZT lunchbox, 200W into an 8" speaker. You gotta hear it to believe it, pop by Hell's Labyrinth to test drive it someday, gimme a call first though. It can be played soft, but if need be, you can really blast this monster without the farting sound you get from blasting most small amps.

Quite interested in the Kustom 12 Gauge mentioned by someone here. At 16watt with a 12" speaker it sure sounds ideal for a home amp

Oh I just tried the Blackstar 5-watt last weekend. The drives and cleans are pretty impressive. The in between tones are not too bad but not that great either. I'd recommend the head and 1 cab. The combo version doesn't do quite as well.
