Have You Learned Anything?

Just wanna see some views from other softies. In all your time posting, discussing or doing nothing but reading every thread. What have you really learned besides the context of musical discussions?

So my first question will be, have you ever learned or discovered something within this forum which has totally no relation to music whatsoever. Something that actually makes you say hey that kinda affected me one way or the other.

And my next question is, will SOFT forever be a place to discuss music and nothing beyond that? If so they why?

I do look forward to the replies. I hope something good comes out of this. Cheers. 8)

Q1, Yes, but only through meeting the person and talking to him, never in the forum. In a way I feel very lucky to learn from a knowledgeable and down to earth guy who's not just about promoting hype and other stuff.

Q2. I actually find a lack of musical knowledge on Soft nowadays. Seriously, talking about gear isn't musical knowledge. Neither is repairing gear. Yes, they are related, but somehow or rather it's not as important as playing and appreciating music in my opinion. Learning music theory, how to sing, how to perform and how to prepare for gigs/recording seems more important to me.

There are a ton of non-musical topics around these days anyways, and a lot of pointless ones if you read through.

Tribalcast, maybe you like to start the ball rolling by stating your views?

Hey Thor, like what you brought up to me on msn.

We know that tone is also the search for every guitarist, and so is functionality/quality... hence the booming gear page.

I don't see a severe dysfunctional trend going on here... i think its pretty much the norm.

As we have noted, the gear page is basically swimming in circles. People, newcomers all will ask the same things over and over.

And I'm a gear whore. I should think of a better name. Heh.

But in anycase, like what I said, you need a teacher. Since you don't find anything on the Internet that seems to drive your playing.

I gained a ton of patience. Seriously. Ask Thor how many times I've whined to him on MSN... :D

SOFT hasn't been a just-a-music-only place... but its definately going to be music-related and it should STAY THAT WAY. I mean, we have ppl sharing problems with relationships over music, budding musicians looking for advice on a career in the music industry, gearheads like me egging people to make senseless buys, elections anyone?

Answer To Question 1:

I have yet to discovery something unique coming from this forum. But mind you I not saying that this forum is bad or anything. There are a few interesting post from certain users and I’m still keeping an eye on them. So yeah, still waiting for something to make me go wow.

Answer To Question 2:

Answer: Hmm at this point I don’t really know because the topics that usually come along are music related. I would like to see a diversity in topics maybe something like new age religion, individual beliefs and views towards things in their lives. And people having open discussions on it. Sorry James but at times I do realize you have this “This is how I see fit and no one should talk about it anymore” thing going on. Well of course that’s you and how you work and then again I don’t own this forum and not paying for the bandwidth. Anyways James what I’ve said is not to offend but more on how I see it. Yeah overall I would want a diversity in for the topics in the future.

I have no problems with gear discussion and how to use particular equipment. Would like to see more balance though. Nobody ever talks about the music theory or performance techniques these days.

And yes I agree with HRS aka Anthony. People should get out more of this forum to see gigs, talk to people in real life.

with the current amount of music/gear discussions threads, i gained quite an amount of knowledge from soft. some stuff needs to be tested, some need to be rehearsed. hitting 36 soon, the learning sure never stops. cheers.

Tribalcast, SOFT's main focus will always be music, community and nirvana.

satisfy your own musical needs.
help the community.
attain enlightenment.

* when i use the word nirvana, i am using it to discribe a state of mind where a person is clear of his/her surrounding and does what he/she does.

SOFT current aim is to gather as many people who are interested in making music as possible. with more people, we can then push out programmes that will benefit the masses.

ShredCow and thor666 has been very generous with their knowledge on gears and music theory. yes, it always seems to be the same questions raised. move away from those questions or pick the ones you are interested to anwser. dont wear yourself out. most importantly, keep a calm and clear mind.

i only wish i have more resources and time to make SOFT more happening. as of now, i am to my max already.

* those who feel they like to help out to make SOFT a better place, i urge you to contact me
:supz:

i learned that today the user by the name of soft went on a forum culling rampage. 3 forums in the space of an afternoon, GENOCIDE OF THE THREADS!! aLRIGHT!

Hmm one thing i learned from this forum is alot of gear knowledge. But then I find that sometimes people can be a little too uptight about gear. As for people who asked the same qns...I mean we are all playing the same type of instrurments and so we will definitely face with the same qns and problems. So don be too upset abt these type of "same qns being posted again and again". If u are sick of these, jus don post. The worst thing to do is to post some sarcarstic reply and put the newbies off. Everyone was a newbie before.....

But I find there is a lack of discussion on Songwritting and Song Arrangement. Hearing the OMs, I can see that there are many good technicians, but most are usually a cover of a certain song or jus a shredding instrutmental. There are not many original songs with vocals....Maybe a Songwritting Sub column should be opened? To encourage more discussion on songwritting? Btw the songwritting comp that has jus ended is a nice idea, I hope it can be a yearly or quarterly event.

well if you guys want the opinions of someone who doesn't know anything about gear...

I just like being here talking to people of similar interests because there's a severe lack of people in my real circle of friends. Crappy threads or not, I like to come here often.

That is all. If that was useless, then pardon me :)

i learn today that ignorants exist in the form of super_punk. oh btw it's threads not forums. he has the right to lock the thread as he deem fit, should the discussion steer away from the original intent.

what we need is more discussion on creating music itself(talking about how-to guitar). i don't actually mind people asking to be exact, but when they could play their part and search for what they are looking for first. it's okay if they do it once or twice but if almost every thread they start is pertaining to something that has been discussed time and again and can be sourced easily over the net, then i'm sure the people would get pissed off.

and i'm with Mobius here. i want to hear more songs with vocals in it. Hey James why not make the next competition(should there be one) something to do with songwriting? you know making a song with vocals in it and stuff.
just my 2cents worth.
