hi, just curious. i plan to bring a guitar across the causeway. do you people know will kena tax or not? thanks..

You have to declare the purpose of bringing in the instrument.

If you have a gig, present a flyer or invite and if its just personnal entertainment .... practise your gift of the gap

declare at the singapore side or the malaysia side? um.. don really understand your phrase "practice your gift of the gap"? :)

on the other hand....

you don't have to do anything.

any musical instruments that can be "HAND CARRIED" is not taxable.

oh and amplifiers are NOT musical instruments.

you don't have to do anything

but how come i was called up to declare what i was carrying ??

True Scenario :

Custom guy: Oi, can i see whats in that case.
Goose: Oh sorry, its my guitar.
Custom guy: Ok open.. open...!!
Goose: i am goin to my parents place and i am bringin back my guitar.
Custom Guy: New? How much you buy this in Singapore?
Goose: No lah! two years oredi. How come you know where i buy?
Custom guy:  i ask the questions!
Goose: What you want? (straight to the point)
Custom guy: :smt003 How much you buy?
Goose: $20 at the Great Singapore Sale...How?
Custom guy:
Goose:So how ?
Custom guy:  Go Go go ....
Goose: If you want i can buy for you oso...How? You want ?
Custom guy: :smt013

hahaha... they see you good to makan.

I ever wrote in and ask them officially on The Star when I was a kid then. The "official" reply was can hand carry no tax. Piano cannot hand carry TAX! Amplifier tax until you may have to beg at Wong Ah Fook.

Once I carried in a keyboard. The fellas wanted to create trouble, coffee allowance must be low that week but I keep repeating, as long as can hand carry no tax. In the end I got off.

malaysia shudnt be a problem. i just carried em up the bus to kl the other time i was there. no qns asked. but if they do ask, best answer is to say that its a gift for your malaysian relative cuz u may get turned down in some countries if you say you're gonna be having a gig without first applying some license thingy beforehand.

no need to say you're gigging wat... say you're going in to practice with some friends, definitely don't need license for that!

Your guitar must really look brand new, gosh, they can't tell a used one vs a new one. I think you know what!! I think the custom officer is also a musician, he just wants to check out your guitar!! And if it is too expensive, he gets jealous, so must TAX!! :P
