Seriously I can never figure out which of GNR's drummers did more justice to the band. Some people insist that it was Steven Adler but on the other hand there are those who argue that Matt Sorum played loads better.

Considering also that Steven Adler was their original drummer, he ought to get some credit?

Well imho he definitely lent GNR a certain flavour when they were starting out, and if you listen to their early songs he played to the song. But as a drummer I find it funny (funny ha ha) that his drum parts don't change much - say Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child O' Mine - the drums are very very similar! This isn't basis to argue that Matt Sorum is a more creative player than Steven Adler, because in any case it's Adler's drumming that's on those classics.

BUT as the band progressed, one finds that their music becomes more complex in style and arrangement, and Matt Sorum fits in much better than Steve Adler (as far as I can tell from the drumming anyway) on GNR's later works, because he had the style and technical ability to keep up with the band's musical progress. That's my $0.02.

The other part of it, of course, is that a fantastic intoxicated drummer is not worth any more than a solid, sober drummer.

yea i do find adler a little less variant in his playing style, although IMO i wont say that sweet child and welcome to the jungle are very similiar cuz the intro part of the song where he hits the snare/tom, snare/BD, snare/tom/bd however u play it part is meant to go with the strumming of the guitar, and i like the fact that he kept things simple and sweet

sorum on the other hand, id have to say techniquely better, although some dont like what he did to the band accusing him of turning it into a heavy metal band, id say his playing fits the songs very well indeed, i especially like his style for the song slither (although from VR but still teh same guy drumming with the same bassist and lead guit)

but honestly i wouldnt say that any of the drummer played a very huge part in GNR's success, when u think of great drummers, does adler or sorum come to u mind very easily? well not to mine... but in the case of say slash (though ppl call him overrated), duff, they are household names in their music field (of course if ur not a rock listener then dif story la haha)... though im not saying that they didnt play a part in the band

Oh I assume you're referring to VR? Haha VR a death-metal band? you must be kidding

yeah somehow I feel that Matt Sorum was surely more creative than Steven Adler. His drum fillers are faster too.

But Sweet Child and Welcome to the Jungle wouldn't sound the same without Adler's touch la
