Guitar strings help!

Hi friendly people from SOFT! I wanna ask you guys about strings. The stock strings on my guitar are starting to rust at the part where I strum, especially the e and B strings which are silver in colour. This is about the 4th week I am using the strings, so is this a normal rate for rusting? The sound and tone is still alright for me, but strumming feels yucky :???: with the rust around there. Do you guys think it is time to change strings?

Also, what brand of strings do you guys recommend for someone who has slightly oily and sweaty palms, and on a budget of about $10 or less per set:mrgreen:? I hear of string packs that have all strings coated, are they reliable? And, where can I learn to string the guitar on my own? Any things to take note of? Thanks!

Mine is an acoustic guitar BTW!

Hey there,

I think you should have the habit of wiping your strings before and after playing your guitar. I lack this habit too. :D

Get D'addario strings from Swee Lee Bras Basah. IMO, the strings there are cheap, under your budget of $10. You can also try the shop across, Ranking Sports.

If you want tips on restringing your guitar, youtube has videos on it.

Yes youtube has plenty of videos on 'how to re-string acoustic'. I can teach you how if you have the time to drop by, heh.

You mentioned that you have sweaty palms, so all the more you should wipe down your strings after every session. Coated strings will definitely last longer, so that's an option as well. They cost a bit more, but I feel that it's worthwhile investment.

Can also get stuff like Fast-fret or Stringlife to further prolong the longevity of your strings.

There isn't a fixed time limit for one to change strings. I know some guys who perform regularly and they change their strings weekly. So it really varies from person to person. I, for one, can't tolerate strings that sound dead. So when they die, I change them, irregardless. Some people can live with that, so they might change the strings when they get rusty. But as a general guideline, change them when they rust. I can't imagine sliding on rusty strings.

gotta agree with phil about the fastfret and all. maestro sells this liquid polymer coating too, worth the while if you're not willing to pay more for coated strings.

imo, if you're an acoustic player do try elixirs, ever since i've started on them i just cant stop. they're much more expensive but do last a whole lot longer. BGW guitars has them too, mailed right to your doorstep. just in case youre interested.

i use Rotosound. they seem to last quite long but it could be cos i keep them in my guitar bag when i'm not playing. quite cheap too. can be found at Davis Guitar

i feel that fast-fret leaves your strings and fingers feeling too oily, and once in starts rusting, fast-fret actually increases the rate of rusting. try dunlop 65, or extra life instead.
