Guitar strap preference

kerplunk182, u're a bassist right?

must must must try the sadowsky neo strap. its the ultimate strap for comfort. nothing beats it

I play guitar and bass...

The Mono straps look neat... Kinda like a pillow. But they're pretty broad which sucks cause my shoulders are narrow :\

heard good stuff about the mono...have a levy and a moody...love the moody :) the leather is really thick and helps in relieving the weight of the guitar :)

One think I do like about leather is the fact that it can get mouldy after a while because of the sweat from playing.

With most other material... just chug them in the washing machine :p

ahh, I've had my levy strap for about over a year now and I gig occasionally but no mold yet. When does it usually start coming up?

I would think dependent on quality and how heavy the usage?

Heh, maybe I'm just biased with leater. Cos most of my leather stuff I use often just gets nasty :p

yeah. the Dunlop Gromment Straps that i use are durable but the problems i have with them are that they're too thick and that it's quite long. even if i set it to the highest setting, my guitar's only at my waist. but it could be my size.

I'd use a moody for milder environments - absolutely lovely leather that just molds to your shoulder/back after some time. One of my best purchases.

I'd use a mono for the nastier, slightly more sweaty situations, tho I hardly ever get into any. V functional, thick n broad straps with v good padding. The moody still wins in the looks dept, hands down.

Hmm.. nobody uses Ernie ball strap locks around here? I personally have the black one, looks not bad compared to the dunlop ones haha

My main considerations for a strap are:

Build quality - strap ends must be very sturdy and be able to take a lot of strain. I put my guitar straps under a lot of strain, from both guitar weight and vigorous onstage movement. So the strap ends must be able to take the abuse. Have broken many strap ends in the past, so I don't stinge when it comes to getting quality straps.

Length - has to be able to go from goth to funk (apologies to mono straps). i strap my guitar low for live shows, and high for sitting down / practice / recording.

Backing material - i move around very vigorously and need a strap that won't grip my clothes. so leather straps with the rough suede backing are totally out.

Comfort - ever carried a Les Paul non-stop for 6 hours straight? I have. nuff said. comfort is very important.

Design - its either got to be understated (plain dark colours) or really unique.

I used to use Dickies straps for the past few years, which were decent but didn't really distribute the weight well enough. They did put up with my abuse so that was a real plus. Used to use planet waves straps in the past, and they were pretty up to the task as well, except this one model which was really wide and comfy but used plastic connectors to join the strap ends to the straps. All it took was one show for the plastic bits to give way. after that, it was either metal or sewn-on. I had a gibson strap that was given to me, and I have been using that till recently, when one of the strap ends gave way during a show.

Have been using mono straps since ep2 of live n loaded... very comfy, very durable. it was a pain to fix on my dunlop straploks! but after that, a real joy to use. ive got 4 mono straps for my guitars now. CM have got new stock of their mono straps in short & long and in the normal colours. faster get before the nice colours run out and you are stuck with weird colours like kaki or ash grey... :p

I use a cheap strap for now, bought from Standard Value a few years back. It's been serving me well. I used to have my guitar slung really high (higher than John Petrucci, in fact more like Johnny Hiland) but after getting used to playing it low, I discovered it's really more comfortable and I can really move about more. For now it's at waist or slightly lower.

Well perri straps are really nice and i fell in love with them by coincidence,Id actually got the strap for my ibanez and forgot my strap for a jam session and i had that perri strap with me and the moment i wore it,that was heaven in a way. They are really soft but wicked strong and they grip your shirt more...well i mean for metal playing and headbanging it helps hahaha

am using those retro looking fender straps that guitar 77 sells. they are awesome. comfy and very sturdy.

have tried a lot of different straps over the years but these fender ones seem to stick.

before this tho, the planet wave ones. those which cost roughly 6-7 bucks at swee lee? those were pretty good too. i guess its just me, not really willing to spend that much on a strap.
