Hi guys i know this has been posted a few times and ive did a search on this but so far ive only managed to find 2 people who set up the guitar.

The first quoted me 150 and said i could watch, which is what i wanted. But i feel 150 is way to expensive.

If we could compile a thread on the places that set up guitars and give reviews on price, service etc, i reckon it would be helpful. Post away!

Music factory : Had to leave guitar for 5 days. Did not know anything about setting up at all at that time so i have no idea whether he did a good job. $40 bucks

Do you mean leveling of frets or doing woodwork etc? Cos if not you can actually try setting the guitar up yourself, after doing research of course. But then again if you don't dare/guitar expensive/suay better dun try, especially if you need to do truss rod adjustments. But if you ever want to try, www.fretnot.ws is a good place to start.

Guitar connection does setup but I'm unsure about the price. You can give them a call and ask if you want, 63390606. Ask for kelvin.
I think beez at the yamaha store in plaza sing (music something) does setup as well, price not sure also, but you can call him and ask, 63320141.

Other than that, maybe the place you bought your guitar from, like sweelee. It can be even cheaper.

Actually you do not need to know anything about setups to realise an improvement. If it plays better, than the set up is worth it. If it still doesn't play according to your expectations, go back and ask the tech what he did and he'll probably set it again for free.

Setups can be very tricky as a good setup will not compensate for sloppy technique. Setups can also be very personal. Everyone wants low action, but how 'low' is low. The experienced tech however will use his judgement and 90% of the time be able to please any player.

As for the 150 bucks setup , it probably includes some fret levelling and nut action adjustments. 150 is certainly a premium price to pay, but if it nails what you want exactly it is still worth it.

Hey all,

I'm the guy who's charging S$150 for a guitar set up and that doesn't include a fret dress. gargamelesp forgot to mention his guitar is Floyd equipped. My basic set ups start from S$120.

Some of you may be wondering why my charges are so high. Well for one, I only collect payment when the job's done well and the customer's satisfied.

I'm a trained and qualified luthier. That means I build guitars professionally although I'm presently doing that in Beijing, China. Check out the links below for pics from Beijing and my work.

I've been working on guitars the past 12 years. I'm honest in my appraisal and always discuss the options available with the client before starting work on the guitar. I also always return whatever parts that's been replaced on the guitars including frets that I'd pulled out to the client. I take pride with my work and know exactly what I'm doing and am responsible for my actions!!! I'm not sure how many people here have sent their instruments to me but if you visit the bass players of Singapore forum, those folks there have a lot of good things to say about my character and work.

As Ablue had mentioned, set ups are quite tricky and it takes experience to find the 'sweet spot" on any instrument. I've worked on instruments that's been worked on by others and it just pains me and frustrates me sometimes when I have to undo the damage.

As what Roger Sadowsky said and I'm paraphrasing here, a good set up makes the difference betwen a good guitar and a great guitar!!!

Some people have e-mailed me asking for my credentials. Check out these links. I've been travelling extensively the past few years but will be based in Singapore from early Feb and will be available for set up and repair work. As my repair slogan says, quality work with prices to match.
