guitar paint job

why change color ?? why black ?? burst is nice ?!!

Paint jobs can cost a bomb and usually diy is the preffered choice ... :D

wahahahaha!
blueark you damn creative ah!

i was thinkin of spraying it black so i can custom a design on it..
blueark you should know how i can get all these done right?

I think it's an interesting idea. But cos bursts are so much harder to do than flat colours. I had a friend who wanted to paint his birds eye maple flat alpine white before too ahaha :D

I have no place to reccomend, never done a proper one before. My own is a down and dirty diy job, no where near the shiny sleakness of factory paintjobs.

the key to good paint jobs: the rub outs at the end... esp the grade of rubbing compund used...

The most basic step of a great paint job is the quality of prep work (sanding and priming) before shooting the paint. Then the techniques of shooting the paint (eg. criss-cross to minimise overspray) and finally the drying time given before final sanding and buffing.

Assuming you have good equipment (proper spray gun and compressor instead of canned paints), plenty of experience and a dust free environment (spray booth).

All these subtle stuff separates a great paint job from a good one.

What you want is a thin, even and hard finish. The gloss shine and whatsoever will then come naturally.

To the threadstarter: I recommend you selling your burst epiphone and purchasing a black one instead of refinishing unless the guitar has sentimental value.

Reasons
1. Refinishing takes around 3 months. Do you have a spare guitar in the meantime?
2. Refinishing prices in Singapore is around half the price of your epi. It's not worth it no matter how you see it. And those prices are already extremely cheap for some reason. A professional paint job in the states is like 500-600 USD.
3. One day you'll be looking at higher end guitars and be wondering why you spent the money refinishing your epi when you could have channelled those funds to fuel your new guitar purchase.

My $0.02 worth.

^ yup that's right! Not exactly high speed, just need alot of time and patience and rub hard! Can remove many dings in your guitars by sanding with grit 2000 paper and buffing it up to shine again with autoglym paint renovator followed by super resin polish (my personal preference cause easily available). I believe there are even better products at commercial car shops. The coating on cars are actually similar to modern mass produced guitars (poly/acrylic urethane).

As I see it, high gloss is equivalent to a magnifying glass which showcases every single finishing flaw if the paint job was mediocre. Of course it enhances the beauty of good wood too!

my friend went to the car paint shop to get them to do it..
heard it cost just a 100bucks..
the workmanship was okay okay..
maybe bike shops or car shops can do it..

well i'll consider again..
thanks everyone for your comments!

and maybe if i consider spraying it..
maybe i should spray it a unique colour..
like glitterish dark green?
then it'll be more worth the money cos at least it's now unique..
