Guitar or Amp?

For 400 bucks you seriously won't get much of a upgrade for both. I'd rather you concentrate on either guitar or amp. Someone's selling a Laney LC15R for 400 and 450, which is a pretty good tube amp and can probably last you for a rather long time IMO.

But like MadWerewolfBoy and I said, practise for now, save on the way, and once you've improved get yourself a decent guitar. By that time you would have a better budget to work with as well as more knowledge and experience when buying guitars/amps.

Pot calling the kettle black. Santana, you might want to take your own advice.

Being sarcastic isnt exactly just 'commenting', is it? If that was your only 'comment', sure, we're just gonna ignore your comment. However, as the rest of those who has seen your other posts before, will know what I mean. It also seems like your the only one who cant seem to get over previous arguments and constantly referring to past incidents in the forum. I do hope, all the best of the thread, and to the threadstarter who was just looking for constructive answers and opinions to his queries and questions.

ermm.. Santana? I see no santana here. or are my eyes failing me? =/

I think the 70% case which J.custom said is true. My beginner package comes with a decent guitar but a lousy amp. And no matter what I do to it, it still sounds like crap. A good amplifier is really important for me to enjoy my playing. xD

@clement7903:

hey bro, just to give you a bit of an idea of what i would do if i was on a tight budget. do look out for good deals on the soft classified ads, you'll chance upon them every once in a while and it's good to have the cash ready cause you'll never know when.

There are two ways things can go from here. maybe you find yourself in a band with a few buddies, and then you start jamming in studios and perform at venues. you might want to consider spending more on your equipment you bring around than your home amplifier ie, guitar and effect pedals.

if you don't intended to form a band and or perform anytime soon, you might want to consider upgrading your amp so that you get a tone which inspires you to play more.

it's hard to describe what's a good deal for guitars because there're just too many options, so kiv this until you form your own opinions and get a clearer picture of what you're after.

for effects, you can 1st start out with distortion pedals and reverb or delay units. value for money ones are the danelectro coolcat series and for delay, ibanez de7. $100 to $150 is enough for 1 to 2 of these in the 2nd hand market.

for amplifiers, you can either go for the 1 to 5 watts range like the blackstar ht-1/ ht-5. these are a little pricier than tube modelling amps like line6's spider IVs and vox's VTs but they'll definitely give you a more authentic tube amp feel. the tube modelling amps i mentioned are good too and in order for it to be a significant upgrade from what you currently have, you should aim for combo amps with larger drivers (speakers), ie 10" or 12". for 2nd hand, $300 and below is sufficient for the said solid state amps, and for low-wattage tube amps around $400.

if these seem too expensive now, then save up a bit first. you can most probably sell your current gear off too to recover some of the money you spend. buy 2nd hand, sell current gear, that's the way to get great value for money when upgrading. but the most important upgrading cannot be bought with money, and that's time spent practising.

don't do what i do, whole day bo liao here on soft then never practise guitar, gear good skillz cui people laugh

A new line of pedals you might also wanna try out is the Modtone Mini series! Price ranges from 60-70 bucks, looks quite worthwhile to me, a delay for $69?! Very cheap indeed.

But of cos, we can't be comparing the Modtone Mini with the standard version. xD. The delay can indeed serve well as a simple echo but nothing more than tat. But at least for tat kinda price, it is good enough. IMHO, the distortion most similar to it's big brother, Speedbox.

Nope, if your amp is shitty, sad to say that no amount of pedals will make it sound good. Think of it this way: your amp provides you a basic tone/sound, pedals just add to that tone.
