Guitar Amplifier for Beginners

Hi peeps

I've started picking up guitar a couple of months ago (need to develop some life outside work!), bought only the guitar but no amp, 'cos I wasn't sure whether I really have the interest to continue playing :)

Now that I'm more or less sure, I'm scouting around for a guitar amp suitable for beginners... Something not too big / bulky... any recommendations? How much do they cost? Possible to get a respectable one at less than S$300?

Thanks! :p

what kind of guitar?

You can try the Marshall Mg15cdr smth like that . the 15 watt amp. it produces decent sound with adjustable spring reverb. i bought mine about 6 yrs ago at $190+. Not sure bout the price now hee hee. inflation super power these days. last time Polo sweet 30 cents now 7 eleven sell 70 cents.

where do you intend to use it?
if only at home (assuming the largest room is your living room hall), go get a Roland Micro Cube or Vox DA5. They are way less then your budget and do sound good at lower volume (by low, I mean is louder than normal TV volume)

u can try the sound drive 15w amp...way within ur budget...got mine only a few weeks back for ard $139. sounds decent for its price...only setback is that the vol is rather loud on the distortion channel lol

I recommend the Roland Cube 15x.

It is just amazing.

Clean and Lead channels.

Lead channels comes with built in Overdrive, Distortion, Metal and Metal Stack.

Really good for starting out!

You can get it from Sweelee during the sale!

ok

sorry to hijack the thread

My pic/avatar shows my guitar! ;) Epiphone (Emily the Strange) bought real cheap from Swee Lee's sale :)

Thanks for the tip - oh about the Polo sweet... haha I can't recall it costing 30 cents! Issit way before my time? ;) I remember bus rides (feeder buses) costing hmm... 30 cents per trip? Same era? Haha!

I was thinking of going down to Swee Lee at Sims Drive sometime this week to browse around. Why Swee Lee? 'Cos they got warranty, anything wrong, just bring back and they repair for you. (Does Davis / Blackwood provide such after-sales service?) Why Sims Drive? Hahah, 'cos after that can go over to Geylang and wack some durians :D

Ermm, yeah I intend to jam in my bedroom only, haha, I'm a closet rocker =P "if only at home"... you mean you actually lug your amp all over the place?

even a small 10 watt amp gets really loud. mine is a vox pathfinder 15r (15 watts). i never go above 2/10 where it gets really loud. more than enough for mini gigs, i tell ya!

what u can get:
vox pathfinder 15r - superb cleans, takes pedals well, decent overdrive but no mid cntrl ~$120 2nd hand or city music
micro cube - super small and portable, have built in effects and dist - swee lee
cube 15x - built in distortions, power squeezer(x series) allows max dist at low vols - swee lee
marshall microstack - good distortions and cleans, not sure about taking pedals, looks pro(heh), but overbudget - davis

Hi vickomaniac!

You newbie too? Oh, then you may understand the "plight" of us newbies! Don't know whether you've had the same "nerve-wrecking" experience as me, but when I was choosing my first guitar a few months back...

(After browsing around and noticing that most of the price tags are like $600 and above)
Me: Hi, can you recommend a guitar that is $300 or less?
Salesperson: Hmm... that's a bit difficult leh.
Me: Oh, then do you have a guitar that you can recommend to beginners?
Salesperson: (after scratching his head, rubbing his chin, looking around and pondering, finally produces a guitar) Would you like to try it?
Me: Err... no thanks (I don't dare to say that I duno how to play it!!!)

And the best thing is, the only FEW members of the fairer sex there are not really the ones buying - they are basically mothers accompanying their sons and one gf accompanying her bf and... the cashiers! Hah, pretty intimidating leh... so even though I did a bit of homework before going to the store, it's not enuf! Now must do more homework! ;)

haha im a newbie too. maybe u went to the wrong shop. haha. the place i got my first guitar has tons under 300. and they let u test/play in the dark2 corner. heeh. me even worse. after i decided to buy only did i test the guitar.

Hey hey, thanks to all you people out there who gave your comments / tips / recommendations! Appreciate it! I'll jot down all the amps mentioned on a piece of paper before I go hunting around! :)

Oh, was wondering why my last post took so long to be posted... err, was it cos I quoted too much? Sorry Mod! Am new here and am still fumbling my way around! =P And err, did someone give a thumbs up on the post? Thanks to whoever you are! Issit done using the "Digg It" or "Furl It" function? Haiz, guess I musn't be lazy and go read the "hows", "dos" and "don'ts" section huh...

And KeDraiv, don't worry you're not hijacking, I wanna know the answer too! ;)

theunknown - you power lar, buy liao then test? But I also sama sama lar, haha... Buy without testing, lug it to my guitar "teacher", got HIM to test, got problem, bring back to the shop again, hahah..

my 2-watt roland micro cube and 5-watt vox da5 are loud enough for practice at home. I stay in 3 bed room HDB flat, btw.

But it's definitely not enough for any gig, even small one.
For gig, at least cube 30, but I personally will go for cube 60 if the intention is for gig.
