GST bump to 7%

a GST increase means that people are losing their jobs...well, thats what i learnt in economics..

when the GST in increased, people would not be slacking around without a job as things are harder to get with the GST hike..

somehow, i realise that it IS kinda unreasonable, what about the normal students and such?

geez...

I heard that i would benefit the lower income. lucky i got a colleague who goes back msia everyday, i got my cigarettes from him. I think it will get cds & dvds online. try to do minimal shopping.

Pfft...I bought me axe just before the increase...lucky me...but not so lucky for my upcoming mods...*I think*

OII...BIG BROTHER is watching....lolz

maybe to help the lower income and less fortunate they should increase the taxes on the rich people, and maybe lower the salary bracket for those on the super scale salary scheme in the government sector.

Our wages are still the same , so as to remain competitive, but corporate tax will nevertheless go down following Hong Kong, so that we can attract/compete for foreign investment.

Who is more important here, everyday Singaporeans or foreigners?

Sigh :?

sg taxes supposedly lower than other countries... but yea la... the lower income will get it the hardest... i'm going to move house next year... what a move. :? but i guess government will have a reason... and dudes and dudettes... please show some restrain... we don't want any trouble here.

Yeah we all know what the government feels about online-government bashing.. haha! But anw, i suppose we'd just have to make do with what they give us.. Ultimately, it IS to our benefit, no?

I agree totally, just venting my frustrations :D I'm not garnering a political protest,HAhaha

As according to the main poster, the relevance of this in a musicians point of view is that gear will be slightly more expensive, thats all...and that we can only hope that this 2 % increase will be the last to come(yeah right)

And yes, no matter what, we have to show restraint and hope for the best for our descendants..erm

..

benefits more on the macro level than on the individuals.

i think the govt needs to keep the big companies in spore before they ship out to china and india. if those companies move out, our job market will dip.

the lower income belt will be hit really hard.

are there any alternatives to this hike?

IMO it's an unreasonable hike. are wages increasing at the same rate?

yes. the NWC hasnt been increasing wages ans salaries of our parents (or some of you who are alrady working)....

Raising taxes doesn't keep companies here, it just makes it more expensive to operate.

Now, getting back to the issue, yes a rise in GST to 7% will make gear more expensive for everyone. But, have you noticed that gear prices have not dropped as the Singapore dollar has strengthened over the past couple of years? A couple of years ago the US$ cost 1.7 and now its about 1.56. That effectively means local stores pay less for the gear they sell to us. The difference is more profit (much more) for them.

Now, I wouldn't deny anyone the right to make money. But everyone should consider the implications of a rising Sing dollar on gear prices. For me, having a stronger Sing dollar means I can shop online in the US or Canada and the prices are cheaper. You save GST but have to pay shipping. Reputable stores will make sure the guitars they ship are in good condition and properly set up. And often the prices (before shipping) are close to half of what they are here. Enough said.....

Makes complete sense bro, honestly I have no idea what other alternatives are there(that the think-tanks must have gone through thoroughly in their study prior to this conclusion)

Anyways I pity the companies that are not yet GST registered as they will be hit hardest I guess by absorbing the increase themselves.

Singapore's strategic geographical location, efficient infrastructure and High level of stability and security with low corruption should adequately give relevant impetus for MNCs to set up "shop" here compared to the other 2 giants in this region.

My 2 (per)cent(s)

Gear prices don't fall because of inflation in SG that adds to the cost of stores trying to do business in SG, and inflation in the US that keeps pushing the price of gear up.

The thing about progressive value added taxes like GST is that the ones most affected are low income households that have to pay tax from a larger proportion of their income on basic necessities like food. Most of us here can't really complain since we've got enough left over to buy stuff like guitar gear.

The question is does anyone really care about that the govt does with all that extra tax revenue?
