gretsch guitars

here's something interesting..

Gretsch Tereda Factory tour

The Tereda Japan factory is where all the high end Ibanez archtops from the 60s to 80s were made (and may still be made). The craftsmanship is superb.

why are these Gretsch reissues so expensive? because they are handcrafted by experienced Japanese luthiers using old-school techniques. it's not a modern CNC-mass production factory.

in the factory tour pics, you can see the binding being glued by hand, the guitars stained by hand, and the binding scraped by hand after finishing. 8O

Anybody knows a local shop selling a duo jet ? So far, I have only seen 6210DSW and 6118T anniversary models around.

Nope, there are none.

Swee Lee somehow refuses to bring in the high end Professional Series Gretsches. Maybe its because they figure there is no demand, as their low end Korean Gretsches didnt sell well.

Guitar Gallery at Parklane brings in 1 or 2 pieces on special order a year, but that's it. And their prices are very high.

Better to ship one in from Musician's Friend (US) or ishibashi music (Japan). much cheaper (we're talking 1.5-2k cheaper) even after shipping.

are gibsons and fenders hand made or like factory use machine?

hand made is not neccesarily better than machine made. It also depends on the people using the machine. Also depends on the type of machine that they are using.Modern CNC machines for example fretboards that are cut using laser is probably more accurate and consistant than man can achieve provided it is used properly.

Hmm.

I had tried out one model (wayy back last year at the SL EOY sale at Sims Ave) which looked distinctively close to AC/DC's Malcolm Young's main guitar:

And well... apart from the AC/CD connotations, I found the guitar a little lacklustre in the tone area. mayeb it was the amp, maybe I was just distracted by the Fender Telecaster which I did eventually buy instead.

But I'm really gassing for this guitar:

The guitar you tried at SL was most likely a korean synchromatic series doublecutawat jet. i haven't seen SL bringing in any Japan models at all.

The guitar being played by Dan Hawkins of The Darkness (of of my FAVE bands!) is a Gretsch Elliot Easton signature model. In a Guitar Player mag interview, Dan said he had the stock filtertron pickups replaced with Seymour Duncan humbuckers to make it sound more 'rock'.

The Elliot Easton model has a longer 25.5 inch scale, which gives it more twang than a standard Jet (24.6 inch). It was introduced in 1999 and discontinued in 2003, and used pieces are sought after and fetch rather high prices on ebay nowadays.

its one of my dream guitars!!!
