Got 3 shocks today when i visited Luther's Music Store!

After much thought , i've decided to purchase a beginner keyboard.

Went down to Luther's Music at Ginza after work today to try out some keyboards.

Went into a store, and was greeted by a mild mannered gentleman, who happened to be luther. Chatted with him for a while, telling him i used to visit his shop at IMM and bought a bass guitar from him.

Was asking for a suitable beginner keyboard purchase and was introduced to a selection of yamaha keyboards.

We eyed on the psr - 275, and without much questioning, luther offered his expertise on the basics of the keyboard.

He started telling us about the good and bad points of the psr 275. Played some really interesting tunes and told us what we could do with that keyboard. I think he went out for about 15 minutes even though his friends were waiting for him!

After that, we took notice of another model. The psr - 295, and like the previous model, Luther started teaching us the ins and outs of the keyboard as if we were gonna make a purchase for another 15 minutes!

How's that for customer service. And the funny thing was, he told us, we could play as long as we want, with ZERO OBLIGATIONS to buy the keyboard.

And he top it off by telling my girlfriend that keyboards are meant to play LOUD!! "Play keyboard cannot be shy, must play loud!"

I could not believe my ears when i heard that! He even told my girlfriend that if we have any problems after the purchase, we can always go visit him during weekdays and he would offer to teach us!

1st shocker
He told us that we could get it cheaper at Mustaffa. But might not have warranty covered. But which shop in the right mind would ask you to buy it off somewhere else?

2nd shocker
He told me, no obligations, we don't have to buy if we don't like it. If we're interested next time, we could always email him and ask for more details.

Well, me and my gf, went off after that, and wanted to go for dinner. But after some thought, we decided to purchase the keyboard from Luthers instead.

3rd shocker
When we went back into the shop, luther gave us 3% discount, later upped to 5% because he recalled i used to buy a bass guitar from him. Bare in mind, i told him that before we came back, and not that i wanted more discount from him.

And best of all, he said that he will deliver the keyboard to my place FOC by the next day, as there's no stock available.

For that kind of extra milege luther goes for his customers, it's seriously 2nd to none.

I've never met someone that's so passionate about his job and music, that he even wishes his customers to enjoy that kind of priviledge.

I'm not bootlicking here, but after purchasing the keyboard from Luthers, i would say that i'm superbly impressed by his service and warm hospitality.

Not sure if anyone else has the same experience as me, but all in all, it was a wonderful experience today.

Simply no regrets even if i had to pay slightly more then elsewhere.

Two Thumbs Up.

is he runing a business or service ?

the answer is both.

the way he handles his customer is more like a musician to musician rather than salesman to musician.

i love that place.

As far as straight shooters go, Luther Ong is right up there among the best in town, as a musician's service provider. He seems to do his utmost to help you and be fair while doing it! Many other music store proprietors could learn a lot from Luther.

At the same time, you cannot please everybody all of the time. Every person can only be stretched so thin. Although I'll have to say that Luther honestly gives it his best effort to be the be-all and know-all when it comes to providing information and service to his customers.

Well seriously, i'm really impressed by his service.

2nd time dealing with him, and it was equally enjoyable.

And you can order via email.

Probably get another entry level guitar from him soon.

Luther's all praises, i agree with all you guys (except for jinx, oops, i mean jin). But there's just one flaw in his shop that gives him a bad name, otherwise, i would give him a 100%. And that is that arragont young punk malay guy, he's probably a part-timer or something.

Do not mis-understand me, for I am not a racist (in fact, some of my closest frenz are of that race). The reason I mention "malay" is cos for you guys to easily distinguish who is who (I hope he doesn't employ other malay guys, if not, i apologize sincerely  ).

That fella is a bloody arrogant, idiotic asshole. Luther should take a cane and spank his backside, cos his presence thoroughly degrade Luther's effort to keep his service excellent. I wanted to try a guitar when he was enjoying himself playing very speedy stuff on a veri high gain metal distortion.

Well, when i approached him, he reluctantly let me (well, wat could he do? 8) ). So I took over, bypass his overdriven metal distortion and turn to a veri mild overdrive, and happily try my guitar. Then when someone came to ask him to repair some guitar, he immediately jumped on the chance to ask me "siam", in a very "uncourteous" way. He then turn on his VERY LOUD and overly distorted metal distortion and start playing speedily, in a very arrogant way. U should bloody hell look at his arrogant face, like "I can shred, you can't, so I am big F**K". Anyway, at that level of noise he was at, who can't shred balls?

Sorry i side-tracked a bit. Issue isn't on shredding or how clean u play. Rather, is service. Even a customer is beginner, he should do his part to serve a customer.

Anyway that was the last time i visited his shop. Oh ya, that happened quite long ago. Maybe 1-2 years ago. Sorry, can't remember exactly when. I love Luther man!!!... there none like him... I just hate that arrogant young punk.

hmm ... just wanted to say a word in fairness about luther here ...

tt time when i was buying my guitar i approached luther about about the yamaha entry level bass he was carrying ... at the shop ( clementi ) there were two dudes .. then as we ( me and my fren) were pretty noob we asked the guys there for some help concerning which is the model of bass i wanted and wad amps would be good ... the two dudes on duty were this malay guitar tech and this caucasian dude .. even though they were like busy and both dint play bass they both helped us quite a lot

i mean ... completly noob and the caucasian guy din even play bass but he helped us set up ...allowed us to play and fiddle with the guitar to get the feel ... even if he provided abit of wrong info about the guitar ( made in indo not japan) he still offered quite decent help and advise. unlike the ashleigh music ... tried to cheat us NOObs by claiming his guitars were the best ... almost sweet talked by him into buying one of his "santa fe "

i mean . my fren had no intention to buy a guitar from there ... he even ordered and booked a fender strat from guitar 77 liao but the caucasian guy like even recommended to him and let him try out one of the guitars that caught his eye ... and he even allowed him to try it with a PICK ! really

i went to most of the guitar shops in sg to look for a decent beginner bass to start off with and i can safely say one thing ... the best two i think would be guitar77 and luthermusic... noobies are customers after all ... most shops dun even give ya a look in the eye when they c u are a noob

Yup, guitar 77 is really customer-friendly. I went there a few weeks ago looking to try out a les paul and was helped out alot by the guy there. He even reccomended me a dillion les paul which sounded quite good when compared to a gibson lp. Kudos to guitar 77!

theres an old guy at swee lee hus even nicer.and giving out 25% discounts and helped my noob ass out

no offense ... i tihnk swee lee generally staff very good ... got quite nice people helping noobs there ...

but theres one obnoxious chinese ass there.. no offense to chinese people here k ? i m a chinese too ... that guy is near balding , works at swee lee aljunied ... looks 40 + - 50ish ... he COMPLETLY dosent know his stuff , but i suspect hes one of the boss relative ... shares some look with the relative handlign the logisitics down below

point 1)

i asked for a squire jazz bass ( probably squire affinity jazz bass) , he took up a american highway 1 percision bass beside it .... read off the price tag and said .. "oh [holding the squire bass in his hands ] this one 1200 ... , its beside this one [holds fender highway one bass tag] ayea .. this price "

point 2 )

i was specifically looking for a squier P-bass special that SUBVERSION had seen and recommended ... so i asked this same chink dude ... he look at me ... gimme the kidna weird look ... "we dont have this item in our store . i dont think we carry this item " . guessed what ? . later i made my way down to the swee lee at brash basah ... unsurprisingly . i found it there .
not even an offer to help search the catalog / look for the particular bass i was looking for ..

point 3 ) this is the number one reason i am posting to all u fellow musicians who goes to swee lee aljunied . This guy is obnoxious and dosent even know his product properly and cant even be bothered to check out the prices / catalogue ( tihnk : squire bass how can be same price as fender HIGHWAY 1 bass ? dosent make sense rite ? any noobs also noe tt ) and the best thing is , cos my fren and i dress like street wear .. like abit punk that kinda look , he give us weird looks and like bo-chap , very reluctant to serve you service as if we cannot afford to buy like that

so next time u go swee lee aljunied , loook out for this 40 -50ish old chinese balding man ....
