Good Musician, skill or attitude?

music failed to keep this guy's ego in check:

but he's changing for the better- respect!

I think, for the practical part, most performing musicians do tend to get ranked on their personality as well. Even that staged "I am a guitar god" thing during performance contributes to a "personality".

Sometimes, as fans of a particular musician or player, we get into personal bias, thinking they should be doing this and that, when we forget that they're only human.

Last post on this thread anyway, I talk way too much for my own good.

well, the threadstarter asked for our opinions, and my opinion is this, based on personal experiences( I have never met any of the real guitar pros or virtuosos in the world so I wouldn't know)

to me , a musician is someone who plays and is constantly learning about music.

technically gifted or not, thats besides the point. Professional or amatuer, it doesn't matter to me too.

All I know is I'd rather jam with a humble musician who can't play for nuts rather than a Proud technically gifted musician.

And I'd rather jam with a humble technically gifted musician than a proud technically challenged musician.

oh well thats just my opinion

To me,the attitude comes first before anything else. You can always have time to build up for skill but if the attitude is akin to a month's worth of leftovers, then its pointless even you are well blessed with skills. In my case,my relationships with most guitarists that ive worked with have been volatile. They were good players and know their stuff but attitude on the other hand?Perplexing.Im not saying that its completely their fault(im partly to blame)but if they have a mindset that reads "im the guitarist here and i am only going to play songs that i demand and nothing else",then i guess they can hit the road or become a virtuoso guitarist.I do the guitars in my side band and i am always open to opinion, whether that riff suits the song, the vocalist can go along with the rhythm and when things dont go right,i simply just go home, sit in my lil corner and furiously churn out chords until it matches.I may not be a great player like my idols(John 5,Dave Navarro, etc)but my willingness to learn keeps me going all the time and im thankful that i have bandmates who really appreciate my efforts and help me along the way. Thanks guys!

As for the two guitarists that i have worked with and really earned my respect,i wanna give a huge shout out to Rag from my main band who is not only talented on the ax,but also the battery and his attitude is the top of the pops 8).Theres also Fake from Sang De La Dame who is really laid back and cool,a stark contrast from most guitarists whom i worked with and have little patience. You rock guys!

So moral of the story? Its okay to be less skilled because the band has to work together and help each other along the way to become better instrumentalists but if theres a black sheep in the band regardless of talent, kick him/her out.A band is a team effort, not a ME effort.Cheers :)

posting this question only because i wanted to be sure of what kind of musicians are here, and if this is a forum that i will wanted to be in. thanks for all the sincere answer.
i think i will be able to contribute more in oher musical website forum. thanks. bye.

IMO...All in all...You got good attitude people will like you(as a person lah)

But if you are a musician he same rule applies...

i would rather a talentless musician with a genuine desire to learn, than a really good musician who thinks he's a rock god and refuses to listen to anyone else except his own ass.

Most but not all good musicians I see do have some great attitude. Most of them are willing and happy to share their knowledge and experience with you while chatting even if they do not know you well. But having a good attitude in real life doesn't mean you might be posting 'goody' reply in the forum. Never judge a person by its post. Some musicians might just be giving you a straightforward reply, but you might not be able to take it.

attitude for me =

1) being punctual (be responsible, dont waste time of others, they have a life too)

2) coming with your parts ready for rehersals (be it a session job or own band)

3) professionalism onstage (focus on what is needed to be done)

Paulo dude, thats what happened with my first band.Every week, someone will be late and mpre often or not,i am usually the first to arrive and have to wait for a full 15 minutes before someone arrives next and imagine this:for an hour session, the bassist came after 45MINS and she was too busy checking out the guy manning the studio.

But im no angel myself, and this happened with the abovementioned band. When they kept playing Guns N Roses Sweet Child O Mine and i didnt want to sing that song simply because i got sick of it,i stormed outta the studio until they were done playing that song and ironically,i actually love that said song.Looking back,it was so immature of me to do that so since then,i learned to be more tolerant but now,my vocalist tells me that im too accomodating to everyone's wants.sigh...

hey Dalif, just remember dude, jamming is for fun, its ok. taking a break, checking out babes, clowning around. all should leave the studio in good laughter.

band rehersals/practice is a whole different issue.

attitude.

Musicians are still human beings, that i totally agree on but. Having a good positive attitude and the way you show yourself to others play a big part too.

I believe in being punctual, and being open to constructive advice, while playing skillfully is a big bonus in any bands, being reliable is just as important, no one want a person who can play damn well but doesn't turn up for shows or recordings at the last minute......it just isn't right.

cheers! :)

hi 2 all,
from my point of view
some band has got 4 members (standard line up)
and some have more than that.
It's juz the individual attitude that counts.
Muz have some basic rules to follow.
(Jamming, gig, shows or etc....)

Juz try not to be late in what ever shows.
And people will call u Star Karat. Hehe...
No matter how skillfull u are.
The first impression does count.

It's ATTITUTE, bro. 8)

many ppl say musician are quite temperament...
but quite many of them perform pretty well, though got attitude problems...
