You can get a compressor too preferably with an attack knob and set the attack relatively high when doing the JP kinda shredding stuff i guess.

Agreed! I have had better luck with Compressors going into the High Gain amps.. than ODs? (shock horror). Here's my thoughts on why..

With a nice compressor, you can bring all the notes pretty much to the same level.. ie. you can play lighter and let the pedal work for you. (makes up for my sloppy techniques)

Most compressors would have a nice attack (delay before compression kicks in).. this gives you the rhythmic chug/bite as you dig in.. maybe kind of the edge that you are looking for? Most modern recordings have lots of compression on the tracks.. to give that thick sound..

Sadly compressors are counter-intuitive.. you're squashing the sound (vs blowing it up like an OD).. and the best compression is usually not obvious (vs having the right clipping/distortion that you can hear straight from an OD).. and so these pedals remain largely misunderstood... =)
