Good acoustic guitar to get?

I'm intending to buy an acoustic this weekend. The brands I have in mind are Takamine and Samick. Any idea which model or what tips I should look out for? Thanks!

i read very good things about maestro and they are very affordable. personally i would recommend yamaha, their entry level acoustics are good, very playable. i would steer clear away from samick.

I have a Samick acoustic and people who've heard it like it very much.

But Samick acoustics have thin necks so treat them with care. But I would choose Maestro over Takamine.

Yamaha-ha-has are great acoustics too. Their range can go from affordable to grossly pocket incinerating...

Never ever buy from the Yamaha outlets. Prices are ridiculous there.

Try Luthermusic if you want a Yamaha. But personally I recommend Maestro because they're really well-made and sound great too.

Whats your budget?

If you do not have a budget in mind, and if you are a recreational player who plans to use this guitar for the next 5-10 years.

I'd say you can also include CORT acoustics.

What body size are you after?
Whats your style of playing?
Finger picking/flat picking/both?

If you have a sub-500ish budget, I'd recommend Fina from Davis, Art & Lutherie or Cort. I really don't want to knock Maestro, but the one I tried two years back had really really bad fret work. The fret ends were all jagged and not cut/dressed properly. I don't know how their quality is like these days...

Dude, Taylors are WAY above the mid-range price! :D

But he might wanna get a Taylor when he becomes more professional. But for handmade boutique guitars, I'd get a Blueridge over a Taylor any day.

But for the mid-range price, Art & Lutherie and Cort are my recommendations. But like Maestro, pick out a good piece. Check for flaws, check which sounds best. Maestros are handmade so such things like poor craftsmanship can happen all too often.

I've played some Yamaha guitars and I think they are quite good. You can also check out some mid-range guitar from sinamex, those Timothy are good sounding.

But for my ultimate GAS now and you have the moola, i go for LAKEWOOD! very very balance sound, they can be found at Living Strings.

OKAY. Seriously not behing biased here. Yamaha Acoustics SUCK to the core. Their only good ones are L series which ranger around $1k. Even then, they're not worth $1k cause there're so many better acoustic guitars at the price range.

Yamaha fails at any price : quality ratio for acoustic guitars, though they're classicals and electrics are not as bad. Steer clear away from yamaha acoustics until you've tried a maestro at the price range you're aiming for.

if you are willing to pay over $2000 ... for a high end acoustic , then look at brands like taylor ... if you willing to pay more.. i highly recomend a santa cruz.

sub 2000 ... look at Takamine and yamaha... great guitars for the money.

Yamaha is the one for you if you consider soft acoustics, low resonance, and sustains for less than 10 seconds good.

That's generally what all the display models at PS do when i try them.

Went to sweelee and penin on the same day to test out Ibanez's Artcore, washburns, takamine and maestros and blueberry.

Maestro still wins, quite loud with the same picking dynamics, resonates well which explains why it sustains for nearly more than 15 seconds on open notes.

Blueberry are the ones to go if you budget is a lil higher. They can also be found at the maestro shop at Excelsior hotel basement.

Ibanez's Artcores are werid. I've only found about 2 good ones out of 5 on display at the Sims drive one and the $600 still lose out to the $200 maestro. Same goes for Takamine, these are the ones you need to try before buying. If you find a good acoustic guitar, buy that one you've tried, not a new one from the storeroom, cause these entry models have inconsistent quality.

Taylors/Seagulls/Maton/Larrivee etc. high-end acoustics are in a different league altogether.

I kinda don't like Taylors either, but I definitely don't like Yamaha acoustics. They sound dead... Even the L series. Even if they're well-made.

Blueberry? I think you mean Blueridge!

But I still support Maestro =D

It's amazing.. soft got alot of supporters for our fellow brand Maestro but if you visit G4C.. it's another world.. they thrash Maestro like no tml.. lol..

Oh yes Blueridge! Those berry headsock inlays on them keep making me hungry! =D

I'm guessing its for the inconsistent quality of the guitars? I've got to agree that some of them are more poorly made than others in the same model category. Even so, the average quality is still way above most acoustic that sound like they've been made from furniture wood.

I think the fact that Maestro keeps changing their source of wood is slowly bringing the quality down.
