Going to buy my first Tele... so which one?

Hi,

I'm planning to buy my very first telecaster soon. I'm choosing between a telecaster 72' deluxe reissue MIM and the American Standard MIA.

I really like the 72' deluxe but the only thing that I don't really like is that it's made in Mexico. I'm not really sure about the quality. But I like the double humbucker on it and the 70's big strat headstock and because I play rock, punk, alternative and others that is close into this kind of music.

Then I saw this tele american standard which is made in usa which I think better in quality. I'm thinking if I bought this, I just change the pick-up to those single coil size humbucker and it's good to go.

So anyone here can give me some advise? Should I go to 72' deluxe or the American Standard?

Hope someone can help me.

Never look down on the Mexican made ones, most of them are pretty good and will serve u well..its really not that terrible. I once had a Squier Standard Strat made in Indonesia and before this, I wanted to get a Fender.

I suggest trying out both and read the specs online for both models. That should give u an idea on what to expect on both Teles...things like body material, neck radius, jumbo/vintage frets..these factors determine whether u feel comfortable playing..for me, its more on the neck...some like it thick and some like it thin.

Good luck :)

thanks.. I read a lot of review regarding the 72' deluxe that the neck really feels nice. will come down to a shop later to try. hope they have some stocks for me to try.

Then I saw this tele american standard which is made in usa which I think better in quality.

American = better, that's not always the case but for Fender, the American units are worth the money. any considerations for the Highway 1 model?

instead AM made are better.

but TS.. plse be mindful.. AM standard are of 43mm nut width ( not really sure abt AM deluxe and special)
while MIM are of 42mm nut width

nut width do matter in your playing comfort

Hi, the Am Std Tele is a good choice, but i personally feels the dealer in singapore with the most numbers of fenders in their store (you know which one i'm talking about right?) had been overpricing their fenders.

Fender's website puts a USD $1199 recommended price, but our singapore fender dealer online store wants to sell at SGD $3820....wow.

The import tax the government impose on guitars i think will not be as high as a car, a car's selling price in singapore goes something like this:

Open Market Value + Addional Registration Fee (100% of OMV) + Import duties + GST + Cerfiticate Of Entitlement (COE) + Road tax + Registration fee + Margin of dealer

Then you will roughly get close to the selling price of the car, so a open market value of $8300 will translate to something like $24000 (without coe).

So the point i'm trying to say is, our fender guitars in that dealer's store is way too high. A guitar going for a listed USD $1199 which the transacted price usually lower, so convert to singapore dollars and import tax (if applicable), i think the guitar should worth $2000 at most (excluding the dealer's margin). For this particular expensive dealer, they are like sell you one guitar, and earns another.

Think we are musicians are oblivious to absurd profit margins is it? Thats why i had not been buying guitars in this store for alot of years already.

i'm ok with business earning good money for goods they sold, but for this particular dealer, its a BIG no no for me as its not reasonable.

Thanks for all the reply guys. Just went out today to try some tele's I try the 72' deluxe and the highway one at the big fender dealer you talking about and the american standard at SV. Of all the three, I like the sound/tone of the american standard. And the neck feels awesome. Maybe i will settle with american standard. but now i'm thinking whether i take an alder body or an ash body.

oh yes, the prices of fender of this online store is reasonable compared to the big fender dealer with a few branches.
haha, i think reasonable is an understatement.. they try to price their products as close as possible to musiciansfriend's price. i swear there's no other place cheaper than musiciansfriend, unless u got lobang or staff discount!! the only thing that beats this price is the big shop's annual 50% sale, that one very worth it!

Hahah even with 50% it's still quite expensive... I heard they increase price just before the 50, then cut the 50. not sure whether it's true or not. Still, i think Brendon does it at a most reasonable price.

I'm also thinking of going for alder. coz the one that I try yesterday is alder body and i quite like the sound and also cheaper.
