Global metal

People also tend to think heavy metal includes all that metalcore stuff, and never get to hear the real deal. What's with that?

Its interesting you bring this up. because so far, in Metal :A Headbangers Journey and Global Metal, there hasn't been a single mention of any supposed metalcore bands.

does this prove that metalcore isn't metal?
or that it just isn't what we term to be "proper" metal?

Dude, I don't think there's such thing as proper metal. Every metal fan would have his/her own definition of what proper metal is. I say thrash, some say black and some say death. Of course, some would probably classify glam rock as metal too. And I don't think Sam Dunn deliberately omitted metalcore since he would have some difficulty in covering every metal genre there is. Given a limited time, anyone would prefer to interview dudes from his favourite metal bands.

It's alright and within our rights to worship Satan, if we ever do so. It's called liberty.

A lot of people just cannot understand our music because in their eyes, music is only Gimme More. I won't diss other genres of music because I feel they should be respected too... But pop and hip-hop? No way man.

Metal is more than music. Just like the show has mentioned.

But I want the bullet belt too! I shall buy myself lots of batteries.

I thought the Slayer graffiti on Iranian walls was funny too!

I feel that metal as a genre has provided music with the most wide ranging lyrics ever. From Satanism to murder to politics to loss of family and friends to everything dark and morbid anyone can think of. Now that's creativity for you. To me, metal is a way of life. If listened to and appreciated responsibly with a good, mature frame of mind, one can actually learn from some of the messages in some of the songs. (No, not talking about subliminal Satanic verses blah blah blah). I agree with the message in the movie that metal is a positive way for people to release their angst

if i remember correctly, in metal:a headbangers journey, sam dunn also said that metal covers what the public doesn;t want to be notified of, and what the general public shuns.

You are right. Metal confronts what others choose to ignore. Deaths, conspiracies, corruptions, controversies... Metal covers them all but often no one cares about such issues because they all believe in the "systematic and cultured" life.

i think
mayb what differentiates metal from other genres, other than the music, is the lyrics.
there's always a subversive edge to them and its something we cna relate to. its global.
unlike a lot of other lyrics in other genres which i personally find are very self centered.

Those 'love' songs you hear on mainstream radio... From the lyrics, they're more like lust songs. Those songs just make me sick. Generally the only musical genres that confront violence, terrorism, religion, etc are rock (and again, not many) and heavy metal.

Of course there are some heavy metal bands whose lyrics are utterly ridiculous (I find Manowar's lyrics so blasted arrogant), but the vast majority believe in what they write about, in that respect heavy metal is a very meaningful form of music.

metal music often misunderstood by people coz there are too many seriously serious metal dudes trying to prove those people wrong, by being metallic tough and spikey all around without noticing that its pushing them away and creating more misunderstandings

not all, but some, like in this thread

I think you're referring to me.

Its not like I'm gonna go around in spikes and cause havoc, isn't it? I don't think there's anything wrong dressing up and walking around. What further misconceptions can it cause, unless people I encounter are already hard-hearted towards metal?

I don't think there's anything wrong in expressing yourself however you want to. That's the beauty of being a metal fan. If you want to wear bullet belts, go wear them. If you wanna wear that faded metal t-shirt, wear it. Fellow headbangers don't care. The last thing on the minds of metalheads is to look pretty. I totally agree that lyrics written by good metal bands are eternally etched in our minds like scriptures. You can easily find a real metalhead who can rattle off lyrics of a dozen songs or more like he's telling you his phone number. Another plus!
