I'm not a fan of most sg's as they tend to neck dive and you have to support the neck while playing standing up. Even more so when its a 24 fret sg. Only sg that didn't do that for me was a epiphone sg les paul custom. The 3 humbucker pick up sg. What i do like is the sg's thin and light body and the easy access to the higher frets.

Their not for everyone though.

i own both 22 & 24 fretted SGs- the latter isn't more adverse when it comes to a neck-dive encounter. maybe it's just me...

why wasn't the LPJ recommended?
maybe there wasn't a LPJ at Katong showroom?
SGJ is recommended mainly because of light weight
and it is made in USA original Gibson

I wasn't much impressed by the outer shape and look
of it actually but the light weight is one consideration

I dun think it will neck dive but hope it will neck jive with
the music !!! :p

that's sad. i managed to try it at the BB showroom.

SG neck dive- i'm not too bothered by it because once it's strapped on, it's less severe & hardly affects my fretting hand :-)

The neck dive is not really that serious in the SGs though. Tried the SGJ already and personnelly own the SG Standard. Talkin abt serious neck dive, previously I own epiphone black bird bass niki sixx. Try playing that and that's what I call serious neck dive man haha.

how do to resolve neck dive in such situation ?
is the guitar/bass unplayable if it becomes a problem ?

if you check out Swee Lee website, it's sold out !

how do you resolve neck dive ?

FYI I was just at Swee Lee's Peninsula branch yesterday and they had an cherry LPJ there, hanging alongside a chocolate SGJ... and one cherry LPJ at the Katong branch when I visited last Sun... These seem to be going fast though... May be some stock at the Sims Drive one too. I suggest to call the store first before dropping by.

IMHO if you're considering an SG style guitar under $1k, the SGJ at $799 is a no-brainer :)... When you compare say the Epi SGs and the SGJ side by side, the difference in weight (the SGJ will probably be noticeably lighter) and quality/feel will be noticeable.

My advice if you're concerned about the neck dive would be to bring along a strap and see if they allow you to try it on with a strap and then see if you like how it balances... Besides the neck dive the main thing though I feel is whether you think you can adapt to the relatively chunky neck (supposedly a 50s neck profile, especially if you're used to the thinner Ibanez-type necks :)), and also to check for any dead spots around the F#/G notes on the 2nd and 3rd strings (google : dead spots gibson sg...). But the benefits it brings with lighter weight (it's lighter than hollow-bodies!) is what attracted me to the SGJ most - this translates to less strain and more practice time on the instrument.

Good luck with your search - I just bought an SGJ and am enjoying it a lot! Really great value for the money.

oh? thank you for the information !!!
shall check out Peninsula Swee Lee.

a $799-899 guitar is good enuff for me
will shop for an amp and maybe an acoustic
guitar too !!!

Today at Katong Swee Lee again,
bought the promo Ibanez acoustic guitar.

Found out that SGJ no more but LPJ available;
also checked out Fender Strat standard model
sells at S$699. I think I will buy this instead ...

Fender strat for $699 ?! I must try it !!

Try whichever guitar and get the one you like most.

For SGs, the neck dives have never been an issue to me. My old Epiphone G-400 had a bit of dive but I bought strap locks and the angle shifted the centre of gravity with a strap so the neck dive was cured. My current Gibson SG Standard has no issues (even without strap locks). I've been using SGs as a main guitar for 6 years (until my Jaguar came) and whatever neck dives I have experienced have been on rare occasions; even then they weren't deal breakers as I have always held on to my guitar while standing up anyways.

IMO "neck dive" on a SG is problem that has been sensationalized to become more of a problem than it actually is. Some other common complaints would be: hard to sit down and play with a Flying V, Tele heel contour is too large at the upper frets, strat bridge pickup is too thin unless it's a humbucker, Fender Jaguar bridge has intonation problems. The list goes on, so take heart that the SG neck-dive isn't a "problem" per se, but an inherent characteristic in some SGs.
