Gibson Les Paul

does anyone happen to know what LP model this is?

burstbuckers sounds muddy when distortion is used IMO

i'd switch the pickups to the good ol jb/59 set or alnico II ala slash :D

yeah cool topic!~ Got meself a 1998 Gibson Les Paul Standard model in the discontinued wine red finish. Love the hardcase and the vibe bout this axe. you have to play it unplugged to hear the sing..thats where it seperates the "axes" from the "ex's" no pun intended LOL

I recently played an LP standard with a Pearly Gate Plus bridge and a Alnico II neck. Very nice sounding guitar.

The experience has prompted me to switch my PRS pickups to a Pearly Gates bridge and 59 neck. Look forward to hearing how that set sounds like.

I know many people will want to kill me but........a Les Paul is a stupid old guitar!

it is uncomfortable to play and hurts your ribs and arm on guitar
it has terrible neck joint
so hard to play over 19th fret
old vintage flat tuners with plastic tips are a joke
plastic inlay on $4000 guitar???
smooth knobs are hard to turn when sweaty
fretwork is sometimes terrible (look at fake wood filler around frets)
plastic nut is sometimes cut bad so string sit on top and not in groove!

It was designed in 1950's and Gibson has done nothing to improve it. It is so funny that they spend more time and money selling re-issues then making it better guitar.

Everything else in this world has new technology and improved since 1950 but not the Les Paul.

Hi L.P.,

You definitely have some valid points in the post.

I'd like to add one more: LPs are generally heavy as hell.

Even so, given LPs are built the way they are, LP players have generally turned a blind eye to its quirks and focused on its positives; the look (love the shape), the feel (thick fat necks with binded sides) and tone (thick & full) that only LPs can provide.

I guess its true; Love is Blind :D :D

Yeah, I'd have to agree with JMguitars. I've never liked the feel of a les paul, it being heavy is one thing, its unbalanced as well, just doesnt do it for me in terms of playability. But, its been said before and now i believe it too - nothing sounds like a les paul except a les paul.

JMguitars, that's a nice choice of pups for ur PRS, they've seemed to work well in the BAM forum. Is yours a mccarty? custom? Do tell us how the pups work in your prs :)

Sure Pickg,

Just bought them today. They'll be going into a McCarty.

A review will follow once I've had some playing time with them.

wah... but you know what?... that is true.

gibsons though they carry with them an awesome oldschool vibe. isnt really worth 3k for a simple lp standard. i love the design and looks.... but i would much rather play other mahonany bodied guitars for that price. 3k can get you a nice warmoth custom.

PRS also quite exx la ... but at least they look and play better... tone abit subjective so wont touch on it.

If im not wrong, it's a Les Paul Standard, but in one of those "sparkle" colours that gibson retired some years ago, the same year as the Gibson Goths.

I think it's a Les Paul Custom due to the neck and headstock binding.

Personally, regarding Gibson guitars, I used to think the same thing about Gibson. Shoddy workmanship, overpriced item due to it's so called history. But I acquired a 61' SG Reissue about close to one year ago and for the first time say I'm in tonal heaven. Workmanship was good. There are lemons though so for anyone searching for any Gibson, take time to search around as I'm sure there are workhorses around.

Come to think of it, i didn't take notice of the headstock. Yea, it does looks like that of a gibson custom.

Anyway, here's the one i mentioned earlier.

Les Paul Standard Sparkle finishes (frost, sterling, crimson)
Discotinued- 2000

Les Paul Standard Sparkle finishes (blue, green, diamond)
Discotinued- 2001

Go have a look if you want.

IMHO, the successor to the LP, the SG is alot better.
*Lighter
*Just as much balls and tone
*More access to upper frets

Of course the LP is still a good guitar...
