Getting a Set!!

hey guys i'm getting a set with a price range of like 1.7k to 2k.. any suggestions? i was looking into gretsch but only ranking holds it and they don't have a catalogue of any sort, plus the guy who works there is a bit of an ass.. sooooo any form of help would be appreciated.. i'd like to try the kits first if it's possible as well.. not many shops have that option.
