Getting a good rock tone.

I have trouble getting a good rock tone! I am currently using gibson les paul studio, keeley ds1, marshall mg30fx.

My amp is running clean and distortion is from my ds1. Anyone can recommend me some setting on my amp's eq or setting on ds1 to get a good rock tone? thanks.

i suppose u can try using the ds1 to boost the dirty channel of your amp. gives it more gain and juice.

Getting a good amp will help you get that much closer to a good rock tone.
As for tweaking, its good to always play be your ears. if your ears like what it hears then you are on the right track. Tone is subjective so one man meat is another man's poison.

Have you thought of upgrading your amp?
:)

Agree. A distortion pedal alone can't seem to get a cranked tube amplifier kind of sound, but using it to boost an already distorted sound from the amplifier does the trick. And it doesn't need a big-ass amp, either. I accomplished that with my little 10-watter.

I tried boosting the distortion channel of my amp, it sounded horrible. Even when i set my amp to crunch mode ( low distortion), coupled up with my ds1 it sounded weird and is quite noisy.

What amp do you guys suggest if i were to upgrade?

i prefer just using the marshall's dist IMO. cause i find the ds-1 too thin. hahas. but like others have said, tone is subjective. :D

too much gain will cause noise. does your amp offer an effects loop? is it in the effects loops or straight out into the amp? DS1 for boosting... hmm... i'm not too sure if a DS1 would be very ideal for boosting. Esp at higher gain levels.

Try the vox valvetronix amps. value for money and it's got some killer dirt. if you want to splurge more than that and of course there are many better alternatives.

To me, Marshall amps in overdrive mode sound pretty good for a solid state amp. You could try turning up the gain a little, some like a more trebly tone than bassier one, others vice versa, just play with your mid knob too and keep finding that right tone that suits you. Idk whether the ds1 stacks well with the Marshall though~

rock tone

i think u need to get rid of the ds-1.
try out some other pedals.
there are some good n reasonably priced distortion pedals out there.

I prefer treble... Right now im pretty confuse with the amp settings...

Even though im running on clean channel, the gain knob still have some effect on my tone of my distortion from my ds1... When i off my ds1 the gain knob doesnt affect my clean tone but when i run it, the gain knob have some effect on it... So right now im wondering which level shud i set my gain on...

wait a minute... you're using a keeley moded ds-1 and u can't get a "good" rock tone out of it? o_O

what's ur definition of good? any examples from songs?

For Linkin Park, Skillet, etc, you will need a high-gain distortion pedal. The Boss DS-1 is a medium-gain distortion, and not only won't have enough distortion, it won't sound 'scooped' enough. It's more of a metal distortion tone you need, not a rock distortion tone.

haha yeah, rock is too general, important to define it in ur first post otherwise ppl will be giving wrong advise.. i found it weird when u mention u can't get a good rock tone when u said u were using a keeley ds-1

seems like u're after post-grunge, industrial rock, nu metal type of distortion. quite heavy + a lil grainier / less smooth. a keeley ds-1 will get u a type of distortion on the other side of the spectrum, fat + smooth. not quite what u're looking for imo.

try getting a pedal that does some kinda metal distortion. what's ur budget?

I dont have one yet but if you guys were to recommend me something, i would save up for it... I rather have something good but expensive to last me long than something cheap and able to last me for a short period of time...

Try a Boss MT-2, i think that's a REASONABLY good pedal for the price. You can always get it modded if you think it's not to your standards.

yo bro...try the AMT rammstein..
my first distortion pedal...still use it..versatile.
its now known as AMT du hast..try it bro
